Jure. On the night of Tuesday the 15th inst. the waggon shop of I). Whitmore, with all its contents, were entirely consumed, together with two mail stages of Mr ('lark, and one of Messrs. Emerson 8c McClure, besides several dearborn waggons, belonging to other individuals The fire was not discovered until tor) late to save any thing. On Ihe next night, the house of Mrs Doo ling, about nine miles from this place, with its entire contents, were consumed by the same devouring element. Small J1oxr. It becomes my duty to inform my readers, and the public, that this loathsome disease has made its appearance in this place I am at the same time enabled to say, that by the precautionary measures promptly taken by the Trustees, we have every reason to believe its spread will be prevented. Vaccination, however, should not be de layed by those who have not already used that precaution. 1 3lh The steamboat Don Juan, capt. Swager, arrived, discharged part of her cargo, and proceeded same day, bound lor Montezuma. Same day the Criterion arrived, and alter laying to a short time, left, destined for Lafayette 1 4th. The Paragon arrived, and after a short stoppage, left, destination Lafayette 15th The Virginian arrived, and after a short stay left, destination Lafayette. 17th The Java, from Louisville, dis charged a portion of her cargo, left same day tor Lafayette. 18th The Don Juan arrived from Montezuma; left same day for Louisville, K.Y FOR THK WHSTKRN SUK'. WONDERS. I wonder, said my aunt one day, (A maid of nine and twenty,) Why bachelors grow old and gray, When pretty girls are plenty! I wonder why they never choose A wife to mend their stockings, To keep them warm, keep off the blues, And love them O 'tis shocking! I wonder if they think our smiles. Our ogling winks and glances, Arc thrown for nothing but the wiles Of Fortune and her chances! 1 wonder if their hearts are form'd Like other human creatures; Or must they be attack'd and storm M And gain'd by warlike treaties! 'J wonder why the stoic elves Don't come with manlike carriage, And fearlessly announce themselves? As candidates for marriage! I wonder why, on each leap year, They are so very anxious That we should "go a courting dear," While they ne'er try their chances! 1 wonder why, at any rate. Some taxes are not levied On those who do not populate They'd have them soon replevied! I wonder could a maid be found, To think such laws oppressive; No, no, their praises they would sound, Their joy would be excessive! G. 3J. 35. Suiisthia,
