POETICAL ASYLUS?.

PARODY OF

"The Minstrel boy to the War has gone.

Th? Alderman to the feast has gone. Near a loin cf veal you'll find him ; A napkin clean he has girded on. And a v alter stands behind him.

" Loin of veal,' cried the man of lard, Though all the gue sts despise thee.

One eve at least shall show regard,

One watVing mouth shall prize thee.

The glutton gorged, but the luscious loin Could not bring his huge paunch under ; He seized a roasted pig by the groin,

And he tcrc its limbs asunder. ( And cried" Delicious infant swine ! Thou feast for saint or sinner, I'll pac'-; thee down this throat of mine Thou'it squeak no more ft.rthy dinner." BOYHOOD. The dreams of early youth, How beautiful they are how full of joy. When fancy looks like truth. And life shows not a taint of sin's alloy. When every heart appears The temple of high thought and noble deed: When our most bitter tears Fall o'er some melancholy page we read! The summer raorn'3 fresh hours. Her thousand woodland songs her glorious Oh ! life's so full of flowers, hues ; The difficulty then is where to choose. The wonderful blue sky Its cloudy palaces its gorgeous fanes The rainbow tints which lie Like distant golden seas near purple planes.

and fetched it from tho back room, and set it down beside him. Well, presently

our tea was ready, and I could'nt do no

less than ax him to take tea with us. Oh

no, he said, he couid'nt stay a minite ;

nut nowevcr ne concluded he u take a

drink of cider with my husband, and so

he did. Well, after we'd done tea, I took

my knittin' and worked till I thought it high time honest people should be abed. But Captin Spinitout had forgot his

hurry, and there he was still setting and

talking with my husband as fast as ever. I hate above all things to be rude, but I could'nt help hinting to the Captin, that it was growing late, and may be his wife was wailing for the kiltie. But he did'nt

seem to take the hint at all there he sot, and sot, and sot. Finding that rrords xvould'nt have any effect, I next roll'd up my knittin, work, set back the chairs, and told the gal's twas time to go to bed. But the Captin did'nt mind the hint no more than if it had been the bite of a Sua but there he sot, and sot, and sot. ' Well next I pull'd offmy shoes and roasted my feet as I commonly do jest before going to bed; but the Captin did'nt mind it no more than nothing at all

the country the result is, we have coun-

trv bovs without mnl07tnent or the

means of existence and city boys without trades, or with professions that are useless. No wonder therefore that an advertisement for a single clerk should be answered by fifty applicants. Our mechanics, who have grown rich by honest labor, indulge a false pride in not bring inpr up their own sons to the trade which

has made their fortunes. A stupid boy,

according to their opinion, must go into the shop, but the smart lad must have a

half, and a half collegiate education and

study some profession. The stupid boy

with brawny shoulders, and hands callous

by labor, acquires a snug property and

brings up a little family, while the indulged ptt is an attorney at law without

practice, or an xvi. u. witnout patients, or perchance a merchant without capital, or a storekeeper without credit. A lad of 14 should begin to ask himself the question,' t am I to door myself J" If he studies his interest and resolves upon a trade, he should forthwith select

his master and go to work His father may wonder at his want of ambition, as

he would call it his mother may be very sory, and his sister cock up her

proud nose at her brother being a filthy mechanic, but let him continue at his

that he should soon die, he concludes ivjth the following prayer. After bid ding adieu to all the favorite scenes of his youth, he thus continues Forget this world, my restless sprite.
