POETICAL ASYLUM.

From the Norwich Spectator. "NOW-A-DAYS." Alas! how every thing has changed, Since I was sweet sixteen, When all the girls wore home spun frocks And aprons nice and clean; With bonnets made of braided straw, That tied beneath the chin, And shawls laid neatly on the neck. And fastened! with a pin. Eut now- i-dys the Ladies wear French gloves and leghorn hat"?. That take up half a yard of sky, In cool shod shape, or flat". With gown that do not fall as low. As S'inh thhis ought to fall. With waists that you might break in tw, They arc so very small. T recollect the tim?, when I Ho H father's hors t" mill, Acrni' the meadow's rocky field, An up and down the hill. And v.-hen our folks were out at work, As true as I'm a sinner, TjumpM upon a horse, hare-back, And carried them their dinner. De.ir rr.! young ladies nov-a-days Would almost faint away, To think of riding out alone, In wagon, chase or sleigh; And .s for giving 'pa his meals, ()' helping 'ma' to bake, Oh s lints! 'twould spo'd their lily hands' Though sometimes they make cakes.' V!h-! winter cam, and maidens' hearts IVgan to hear and flutter, Kich bau, would take his sweetheart out, Shigh-iiding, in a cutter; Or if '.he storm wash-leak and cold, Th? girls and beaux together Woo 1.1 meet and have most glorious fun, Aod never mind the weather. IVjt now, indeed, it grieves me much Th? circumsti :e to mention. However kind a -t.ng man's heart, And ooncst his intention: He ne'er con ask a girl to ride: Hut such a war is waged! And if he sees her once a week, Why surely, 'they're engaged. I nver thought that I should try My hand at making rhv nts, Rut 'tis the way to reprobate Tht present evil times; For should I preach morality, Is' oinion, sobc prose, Thv'd say 'tws older than the hills, Or else-turn up their nose. I've almost lived my fourscore years, Eve got a hot of neices, And have to fix their trumpery, S i can't write more such pieces, Butch' itmk:s u almost cry I don't know what to do, Whem now- d vs. I think upon What folks an coming to.

PROOF THAT A MAN IS DEAD. A subscriber to one of the eastern papers, a few years ago, being sadly in arrears for the same, promished the editor, that if his life was spared to a certain day, he would, without fail, discharge his bill. The day passed and the bill was not paid. The natural conclusion therefore was, that the man was dead absolutely defunct. Proceeding on this conclusion, the editor in his next paper, placed the name of the delinquent under his obituary head, with the attending cir

cumstances of the time and place. Pretty j nance ot the poor, the idle, and the destitute;

Remedy ron, the Blues. The sover-

cign'st thing in the world, as Shakepear

says, tor tne uiues, is to nuc a uaru ironing

horse one that will toss you out ot the stir rups at every step one that will compel you to hold on the mane with one hand and

with both if you could spare them. Une whose motions arc so violent and so terribly

up and down as to make you wish for half a dozen hands at once, two whereof you would employ in managing the reins, two more in

grasping the animal s mane, and iind use tor

the residue in keeping your inside3 in their

proper places. Such a horse, under full motion, will make you forget the blues, de pend upon it. It is a harsh rcnedy, we grant, but an effectual one at least, while you are under its operation. True, say you, but it removes one affliction by subitituting another. Very well, many other remedies operate on the same principle. Canthara dies cure one diseas" by creating another; mercury and tartar emetic do the same. Electricity is a shocking remedy, but very good

in itt plicr: anu the riding of a hard trotting

horse is but another mode ot being shocked

shook or shaken, as you please to have it. It fairly tosses the blue imps out of you.

Try it vhoover you are, that are afflicted with the blues, if you have energy enough

or will, at any time, be reciprocated.

A SPANTAN MARRIAGE. The mvstery attending the Spartan mar

riages had in it something exceedingly ro

mantic and touching to the imagination.

Vhese took place by stealth and in the silence

of niHit. sVhen matters were arranged by

means of the female friend who acted as the match-maker, the lover stole into the cham

ber of his mistress, and the union was com

pleted. No signs appeared in his conduct

of what had taken place; he lived in public

as usual; and if he was seen at any time steal

ing towards the habitation of his mtstrcss-

wife, he was exposed to the rude raillery and

laconic jests of his comrades. A higher flush no doubt was observed upon his Spartan brow, when in some public assembly, he

was conscious that those mysterious eyes were fixed'upon htm, whose glances of love and perhaps never met his in the light of day.

To inclinations however, were seen in liis

manner of a wandering heart; their meet

ings continued to take place in secrecy and solitude; the inventions, the stratagems, the rsrsnes. the doubts, hones, and fears the

thousand feelings and adventurers of forbid

den love continued to be the last to lend

their stimulus and charm to this romantic

union.
