Prom the Potaivataxiic and Miami Times TirpRc anoe Lakes. Ii is not generally hn n-.n, we presume, even by the citizens ot our own state, that the Northern section of this state contains not less than 64 lakes. The principal part of these Lakes are near, or io the vicinity of Tippecanoe river, hence, we have given them the name at the head of this article ; but many of them may be found near the Met-e ma hour, (a tributary of Tippecanoe,) Kan ka-kee, Yellow river ; St. Joseph of the Lakes. St. Joseph of the Mauniee, Turkey creek and Eel river. They are of diHt't ent sizes, from 3 to 15 miles in circumference. Some of the Lakes have out lets, and oihers have none, at leat that have, as ycti been discovered; a? I what is very
letnaikuble, those that have no perceivable outs, contain fish of a very larc size. These fish, we arc told, arc from 1,2,5 and even 15 feet in length. This may be considered a u fish story," but we ba e been informed bycredible persons, that the Potawalamie Indians aver, that they have frequently seen, in one of these Lakes, cn Tippecanoe, near the Potawatamic mills-, 25 miles North of this place, a fish, w hich they say i3 15 feet long. That there ia a fish, or sci pent, in this Lake, we have no doubt, but of what kind, we are unable to say. It may be the Sra Scrient, which has made its way through the NewYork Canal, to these Western wilds. The Indians, however, ate not the only persons who have seen the monster ; we are told that several of our citizens, who were employed at the Potawatamic mills, have seen, at dilVercnt times, a fish which they supp - ud to be 15 feet long. The Indians, we are told, will t ot venture themselves on this Lake lor any consideration ; but one of the citizens above alluded lo, however, had courage enough to venture himselt in a canoe, an I pass round it. He Ascertained that the general depth of the Lake, a sli irt distance from the shore, was about 2G feet. The water in this Lake, and in all of them, is clear and cold, and the land immediately aroun-J many of them, we are informed, is of an excellent quality. The Man a-too Lake, (or Devil's lake, so call cd by the Indians,) is situated between Tip
pecaooe and Yellow liver, which we arc told has m out let ; it also abounds with fish of a hrgesize. The name of this lake was given by the Indians, in consequence of some large bones, which were found in, or near it ; the animal is supposed, by the Indians, to have been killed by the Devil ; hence, it bears his name. Fiom which we mav infer, that these
----- j people not only believe in the existence: of a devil, but that ha actually inhabited this lake. Ahut seven miles nonhwest of this place, there is another Lake, which has no out let, but contain veryexeelknt fish; to which some of our citizens frequently resort for the purpose of fishing. L u ge quantities of salmon, pike, black pearch, &c. have been caught in this Lake. I low these fish have succeeded in gaining admittance into these Lakes which have no in, or out let, is a mysterv which vtc shall not attempt to solve. Land Certificate. our of the state, and the interest ot the people, alike demand such a publication, In regard to the accomplishment of the proposed undertaking, we can only pledge ourselves that every possible exertion will be made to meet the public expectation. For a sample of the manner in which the proceedings will be reported, reference is made to our scmi-wcekly publication of last winter, lly additional experience, and an increase of exertion, we hope to discharge our duty still more satisfactorily. Important documents, reports of committees on subjects of general interest, and as full a sketch of the debates as our limits will allow, will be speedily and carefully inserted. It was our intention, sometime ago, to enlarge our paper to an imperial size, atkl publish but once a w eek as usual. Further reflection,, however, has convinced us, that the proposed p!an of issuing twice a week will be much more satisfactory to the public, although much more expensive to us. 1U tbi ; plan we will not only be enabled to publish nearly twice as much matter, but we can also disseminate it much earlier.
