though natural enough, wascalculated to

make an erroneous impression on the public mind. We are entirely satisfied that the Uelipolis has answered the expectations of Capt Shrevo and all the purposes for which she was designed that she is competent to sweep the snags from the bed of the Mississippi in a much shorter time than could possibly have been anticipated ; and that the ultimate success of Capt. Shreve will, in time, rank him among the benefactors of his country. To demonstrate the rectitude of the account given by Capt. Shreve of his operations in improving the navigation of the river, we give publicity to the following certificate. Louisville Adv. mmim MtSSISSIPf RIVER, TENTH SEPT. 1829. We, the undersigned, officers of the United States, steam boat, Helipolis, do certify that we have succeeded under the direction of H. M. Shreve, superintendent, &c. in improving the channel of the Mississippi River at two points that have, for msny years, been cop sidered the most dangerous : namely, Plumbs Point, and at Islands Nos. 62 and 63, so as to be as safe to navigate with any description of boat as any other part of the said river ; and it is our belief that said boat is capable of removing any description of snag in the channel of the Mississippi ; and, upon trial, she has more than answered our most s&nguine ex pectations.
