hi i declined tlie acceptance of the Rcgistet's Olli e at Jelfersonvillc. Mr. Smiley's reasons are, doubtless, the small amount of business tran ;a".ted at the olnce, the dangers attendant on the removal of his family lo a residence on the river on account of health, and the being compelled to relinquish a more pleasant and probably equally lucrative employment at home, and among his fellow citizens, who so often have borne testimony of their respect for him, and who, at the late election, exhibited a continuance of that respect by electing him to
the Lesislaturc.. Republican Statesman. PERPE I'UAL MOTION. This is indeed the age of discovci y ; it is hut two or three days since we published, from an Albany paper, an account of a machins being exhibited in that city, which the inventor and those who describe it declared
to be a peipetual molion. Vc have lor a number of weeks past been apprised that Mr, M. W. Ri -igham, of tills city, was engaged in perfecting a machine ivhicii was to exemplify thi-j long sought for principle. This machine, h now completed aiul will be ex hi Lite 1 this day, from lo to 3 o'clock at Lads' White Hall Tavern, Main stiect. We have seen this machine for a few moments, and mut say that its simplicity struck us very forcibly. It is a pendulum, set and kept in motion by a magnet and appears admirably calculated fur clock work, and we can sec no cause vv by it should not continue to go as loin a; the material of which it is made shall last. It is well worthy the attention of the cui ions, particularly those skilled in mechanics. Cm :in::a:i Dailj Idvertiter. Paier Caiet.t The Pittsburg Statesman mention having seen a beautiful specimen, in imitation of Brussels Carpet, which was manufactured (torn rags at Mr. Ilolships works in that city. It is entirely of pap r ; but so perfect is the imitation, that it is stated the best judges would be unable, at a little distance, to distinguish it fiom Brussels. The body is first manufjotu; c 1 i t the ordinary manner of papr ; and tha colours which are of great valiety 3; beauty, arc then stamped upon paper, and the progress of stamping and uniting it, is the same as that for making wall paper. It is then so highly varnished as lo resist the effects of water, and is thus tendered more beautiful ad donblc, than the imported article If alt. Pat.
