Tippecanoe. I find the route more favorable than could have been expected. The
lands, take them as a body, arc the finest in this country. The timber, water and quality of soil, from about 30 miles above Logansport are equal to any in the western country. Maps will be immediately made out and forwarded to Washington City. The U. S. will
put their part of the land in market this fall. They propose to make the division upon liberal terms they will give the State the first choice, which will no doubt be the tier of sections where the canal terminates. At this place there is a fine town site, and an excel lent place for a basin. The town will be fronting the Canal and Wabash, situated on a high bank of the latter, and about three fourths of a mile from Tippecanoe, and above its mouth about two miles. This is the termination of Moore's line ; and to the credit of this officer, he seems to have terminated it understandingly. The canal may, on its final location, terminate higher up the river; but all this is my own opinion exclusively." Indianaiolis

guilty on each of the three indictments on
which he has just been tried namely, for misdemeanor at common law, in having, in his capacity of Fourth Auditor, and ostensibly for the public service, but falsely and fraudulently, k by false pretences, obtained divers sums of public money, and converted them to his own private use. The cases tried were the two on which the former juries could not agree and new trials were granted, viz: tlie 3'JO dollar and 750 dollar cases, in which hese sums were drawn from Mr. Paulding, Navy Agent, at NcwYotk : and the g2,000 case, in which this sum was drawn from Mr. Harris, Nay Agent at Boston."

Arkansas, June 24 Wc understand that
the appraisers appointed by the Secretary of
W ar, have completed the valuation of the improvements belong to the Cherokee Indians, in the country recently ceded by that nation lothc U. States, under the late treaty. The total value of all the improvements, agreeably to their appraisement, we are inlormed, is between 43 & 84 1,000 -which is 6 or g7000
more than the appropriation by congress for that object. The principal part of the Cherokces have already removed lo the country to which they are assigned above fort Smith, and all it is expected will have removed on or before the 6th of next month, which is the day fixed by the treaty for their surrendering the entire possession of their country to the United States. It will be recollected, that instructions were forwarded to the governor of this territory, by the Secretary of War, some time ago, dircc ting him, w henever the valuation of the Che
rokee improvements should be finished, to lease out all such as should be valued at g200 and upwards. Pursuant to these instructions wc understand that gov. Pope has conferred the appointment of Agent for leasing out the improvements on lndrciv Scott, Esq. who will set out in a few days, for the purpose of entering on the duties of his appointment immediately af'er the Gth o( next month. Ha i t of Red hiver It will be recollected by our readers, that capt. Chase, of the U. States army, was appointed last winter, by the late President, to superintend the removing of the obstructions to the navigation of Red river, commonly called the Raft. We now have the satisfaction of stating, that we have conversed with a citicn of Lafayettecounty, and learned from him, that, ju.t before he left home, some of his neighbors re-
f turned from Natchitoches, La. where they
met with capt. Chase, who was on his return from an examination of the Rait He inhumed them that he had examined tire obstruction':, to the navigation of Red river, with great care, and had come to the conclusion that they aie of t far less formidable character than they have generally been represent cd ; and that they aie susceptible of removal at a small expense, compared with the immense advantages which would result from

The Tariff. We arc authorized to say, that there is no foundation whatever lor the assertion, so boldly promulgated by the Intelligencer and jXational Journal, that the govtMiimcnt of the United States has betnin communication with the British Aiinisit r upon the si.'ijcct of opening a negotiation with the English government respecting the t a ri IV Unit td S. The number of old Spaniards (so called in Mexico,) at present in this city, who have left their country under the act of expulsion, is already incredible it is estimated that there arc more than 2,000 of them, including their families, now domi ciliated, here. Prom their numbers we mubt inlerthat New Orleans must have been their principal rallying point w hich may be accounted for, we presume, in the activity and enterprise of American shipping in those seas ot affording facilities to their escape. This express has only been
four months on his way, which is deemed by the Indian traders as remarkably short, fie was accompanied by governor Simpson as far as lake Winnipeg, where they paited company ; the governor remaining behind for the purpose of making his usual tour of inspection to each post of the company, from which it is expected he will return here in September next. We learn, by the same express, that a number of American trappers are said to be missing, and that it is but too gcneially supposed that they have fallen a sacrifice to the murderous attacks of the hostile Indians

In your late paper Elizabeth Fiy appears to be chagrined at the circumstance ot a fewladies being entertained by a negro hostess w ho Elizabeth Fry may be, it is not my bu sincss to iuquiie ; suffice it to say, that I do not consider the atticlcto be the production of any female, for th cloven foot is discerned throughout the whole essay ; at any rate, in my reply, I have thought best to impute it to a male. The press is to correct errors and to mend the heait. Not to attack individuals, but piiuciplrs 11 otherwise, and I should descend to p. rsonalities, I would hint that " people w ho . i v e in glass houses should not throw stones" it is an old adage, but true ; and if Mr Fry has his delicate car offended by such a trite quotation, he may obtain the same moial fioui the heading extract from Rums. I would ask Mr Fry w hether his unknow n gentlemauship was not one of the late visi tors at the house ol a negro, well supplied with good eatables, drinkables, he. price gratis .; The meeting was pretty large, and it is not solely conjecuire that induces me to believe that Mr Fiy was one of the favoured. If he was. 1 would advise him to take the beam from his own eye before he attempts to extract the mote from his brothers eye. The extreme circumlocution in the style ol attack made by the brave philanthropist, now approving, next applauding, and in turn, by inucn docs, censuring, forcibly reminds me of the brilliant poetic remark, that Dick w as nimble, Hick was quick, Hick jump'd over a fiddle stick " In the display of his great agility I sincerely hope he has incurred no sad consequences
