communicated. The recent anniversary

of Independence was celebrated in this town, in a very becoming manner. Late party distinctions were with very few exceptions, overcome by a liberal feeling of patriotism ; and a consoling unanimty of sentiment seemed to be the inmate of every honest bosom. The toasts touched very gently, upon some controverted points of modern policy, which the oration glanced at in a very able and satisfactory manner. Generally speaking, our citizens entertain but one opinion upon the matter ; and as if by common consent, as little was said as the occasion would admit of. The declaration of Independence was read in a very creditable manner by our fellow citi

zen Mr. James Smithy and the arrangements of the day were conducted very handsomely,

by Cafit. John B. Martin, who acted as Mar shal. After partaking of a very elegant din

ner at gen. Lasselle's (Vincennes Hall) the

following toasts were drams.
