says Mr. Dewey was a firm, but not vio lent supporter oTthc late administration this is his offence." ?vlr. Dewey was indeed, as mild, an 1 is firm an adherent of the late administration, as the Editor of the Register hinuc'f was and the Editor w;s ncrhaps as tirm and unbending in his opposition, as Mr. Dewey himself was in other political opinions which he held during the late war. If JAcon Axdrhson, (or his heirs if lie is deceased) will apply at the Post Office, Vinccnncs, Ind. he, or they, will hear of some thing-to their advantage. Postmaster. ni. watrivs. Wc understand that the grand jury of the District of Columbia, have found a true hill against this personage for frauds, &c. committed upon the treasury. Of twenty-three persons composing the jury, nineteen were the political friends of Watkins, and he has doubtless received at their hands ample justice. They tnus compel to descend from the bench five sixths of the magistrates, to whose conduct they may attribute nearly all the opposition' which has taken place in and out of the piovincial Parliament, and thee will follow a re-action in the bodv politic, strengthening and salutary to it. Hut while the Executive will raise those who have without ceasing, degraded the bench, and often violated, or labored to violate, the laws they had sworn to maintain, the proince will be delivered rc anas chy and confusion. Observer. Ujil Mr van Huren Our time has been so much engrossed of late by Pennsylvania politics, that wc have not given the attention wc wished & intended o have done to Cabinet arrangements at Washing'on. When it was ascertained that Gen. Jackson had been elected President, the public mind seemed to turn, as if by common consent, throughout the Union, to one distinguished individual for the first place in his couuscls. AM looked to the Governor of New York, as the man best qualified, in every respect, to fill this responsible station ; and as it was doubtful w hether lie would resign the high uTrce to which he had recently been elected, for any thing in the iftof the general government, a deep anxiety pervaded "very political circle on the subject. In naming him for his Secretary of State, the President consulted his own sagacity not less than the public voice, and has given proot that the expectations of his Iriendg will not be disappointed. This gentleman had been, originally, the friend of Mr. Crawford. From the moment he took his stand among the friends of Gen. Jackson, he was denounced bv the leading Administration prints, at "the master spirit cf thp opposition and Iroxn a
consciousness of his talent, power, and influencc, he was singled out as a prominent object of attack up to the termination of the contest. Next to the merits of our favorite candidate, and his strong hold upon the affections of the people, he is perhaps most indebted for his triumphant success, to the exertions of Mr Van iiuren. In accepting the station, Mr. V. B. has furnished anotherinstance of patriotic devotion to the interests of his country. He had been just called to fill the highest office of the first State in the Union, under the happiest auspices, and commenced his administration with signal eclat. His inaugural message was every w here complimented, by friend and foe, and its great length
did not prevent its republication in most of
rence or struggle to receive votes will mn, I trust, be expected of me, I shall only add, that if I be one of the candidates selected, the renewed confidence will strengthen my former obligations, to increased exertions for your welfare, and invigorate my zeal in advocating such measures as seem best calcula ted to promote your happiness'and prosperity. With respect, your fellow citizen, G. W. JOHNSTON. June 2d, 1829. 17.3

Had ambition alone governed him, he might well have decided rather to be first in New York, than second at Washington. When he announced to the Legislature, his acceptance of this appointment, resolutions were introduced highly complimentary to him, which were unanimously adopted by both Houses, and on his way to the seat of the

dent himself must feel peculiar satisfaction
in having at his right hand the first man of the i
greatest state in the Union, and who enjoys at the same time so large a share of the esteem of all his fellow citizens. At home, he has long been advantageously known in the various walks of life. At the bar he was an able and powerful advocate, we are told, the Law Reports furnish ample evidence of his learning and research. In the state senate he was for many years one of the most active, useful, and influential members, always strenuously maintaining the rights of the people ; and he frequently took an important and re onsiblc part in the decisions ol that tribunal as a High Court of Errors 5c Appeals. As Attorney General of the state, at an eat ly age, he not only sustained himself, but attained the from rank of his profession amongst some of the most learned and highly gifted men in the country. In the Senate of the United States, his course is known to the world. Here he achieved the fullness of his fame. Compared with the most eloquent debaters 5c profound statesmen of that august body, he was unsurpassed For knowledge of human nature, political tact, sagacity, firmness, and perseverance, ho is pre-eminent. Seven years service in our highest Legisla tivc Councilnnust have made him intimately acquainted with all our foreign relations, and given him peculiar qualifications for the appointment. Wc congratulate General Jackson and the country, upon his acceptance. To Pennsylvania it will he peculiarly gratifying. Mr. Van Rurcn never can be insensible to, or forgetful of our great leading interests. We ate satisfied that the first officer in the new Cabinet has been selected from New York, our next neighbor ; to whom wc are proud to rank nest in point of wealth, population 5c commerce, and all whose best interests arc inseparable from our ow n. TO THE VOTERS OF KNOX COUNTY. The tenor of a fiiendly and dispassionate call made uqon me by a portion of my fellow citizens throughout the county, together with the distinct evidence it afTords, strengthening my own wishes, that in the selection of proper persons to represent the oldest county in
the state, in the next Legislature, public interest will alone be consideicd by the considerate of both parties, has enhanced the pleasure with which I allow my name to be added to the list of candidates. That the individuals who may bethought best calculated to advance the peoples wishes should be selected, free of every extrinsic consideration, is my earnest wish. Our immediate interests, and our ultimate aggiandizemcnt, in population, wealth and trade, arc so virtually dependant upon the long delayed improvement and extension ol our navigatianTthat it is sincerely believed every personal and party consideration should merge in this great object. Ifwc arc to be allowed to avail of the liberal donation of land made by tho general government, is proven by experience to bo a matter mainly dependant up. on ourselves ; and this consideration can no longer be overlooked without a forfeiture. Actuated solely by a desire to render myself useful, I fondly hope a long experience, with the aid of various source of intelligence, Vdl enable me to meet the just expectations of my fellow citizens in regard to this, and some other matters of general concern, which must be disposed of at the ensuing session. I am aware, however, that during a period of thirty. three years residence in Indiana, in the constant performance of various duties, no mortal could expect to be found entirely exempt from faults both of omission 5c com mission : but he who with integrity of heart, seeks to pcrsuc the interest of the country, and the wishes of his fellow citizens, may mcasurcably hope for a fair comparative estimation. Ofl'ering my services under the circumstances, and upon the grounds stated, and at a time of life when any active interfc-
