TUK WESTERN SUN ri.YCEjYA'KS, may 30, 1829 I have been authorized to say, that Thomas McCluiie is a candidate for the Legislature at the approaching election. The Charlcslown paper or tlie 23d instant, says : 4 We arc informed that Henry S. Handy, has received the appointment of Post Master at Salem, in the room of Doct. Bradley, removed. Hon. Wm C. Rives, of Virginia, has been appointed by the President, Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary of the
United Siatc3to Trance, in the place of Jas. Brown, of Louisiana. Wc are informed by the governor, that Robert John has transmitted his resignation ol Canal Commissioner. It will now become his duty to make an appointment to fill the vacancy. Indianniolis Gaz. 7Vie FJefihant The large elephant Tippoo Sultan, which was exhibited in this place last week, escaped from his keepers, in the night, unnoticed, and after reconnoitering the country around, removing such fences, trceb. and other light articles as came in his way. the old gen'lcman ceased his dcambulations about a mile from town where he was found the uext morning quietl, resting himself On leaving Richmond, one of the drivers

The Hook of Jjsher Our readers arc '
apprised ihat a story is told of a recent dis covery of a suppositious Canon of Scripture, called the book ol Jashcr. A work pretending to bear this character, is doubtless in preparation in London, and will probably appear this season. The Literary Subaltern, in noticing it, supposes that this is most probable. Nothing is known of the existence of f" 'i a book, except the references to it in the loth chap, of Joshua, 13- 2d Samuel 1st chap 18. There is no prool that it was known to the Jews at a later period, and is altogether improbable that a single copy should be so

ing the quarrel, thought fit to take part in it", and some of them having been soon killed, an immense crowd hastened from the bazaar to avenge their counttymen, foiced the gate of the hotel, and in spite of the resistance of our Cossacks, and of the Persian guards, four of whom were killed, succeeded in penetrating to the inner apartments, where all that came in their way was sacrificed to their rage. In vain the Schah himself, accompanied by his son, Scion Sultan, governor general of Teheran, came with a considerable force to check and disperse thb rioters. It was too late, M GribojedofF and his suit, had already fallen victims to the rage of the assassins. Only M. MclzofT, the first secretary of legation, St three other persons escaped the carnage. Congressional Anecdote During Mr. Jefferson's administration, syrup was provided in the capitol for the refteshmcnt of the
members of congress. This was furnished, and charged under the head of stationery The National Intelligences soys, thaV. a member, who did not like the beveragejocomely remarked, that he should be very glad if the officers of the House would provide a little whiskey for those who preferred it, and
charge it to the account nffttcl. r-- : : s :.:' r- -xCandidates Department. August Election. Monday 3d, 3829. o r It ei res en ta lives. John C. Riley, John McCi.ur
