Accident Early on Wednesday morning last a boat built barge fashion was discovered floating in the river opposite to this place, sunk to the upper deck, and having a number of sheep on board. Several of our citizens went cut to it in a skiff, h succeeded in landing it at Aurora. Upon examination 45 or 46 head oi large cattle were foundUead on board, lied with ropes, which pt evented tnem from floating oft'. Pour or five ol the number originally put on board, escaped when the boat sunk, some of which have not yet been found. Ol the sheep few were drowned, notwithstanding, it is said, near 400 were put on beard the upper deck, and which, it is supposed, m-king the boat top heavy occasioned her to creel over and sink. Two hundred and upwards got off at Cincinnati, where the accident happened, and the balance onboard were taken oft at Auroia. I he cattle were drawn on shoic, skinned and the tallow taken out, The owners ot the boat arrived on Thursdav. h orn whom it was ascertained that the vessel in question, is the sale'.y barge of the Merchant steam boat. The loss to the owners, (whose names we do not know) is computed to be between 1 500 and 2,000. From the Pandect. Kt CAMPBELL AND Mil. OWE!7. The province of Pasto is entirely under the protection ot the Liberator, and, according to letters from Bogota, even Obando had repented and followed the commissioners ol the Liberator who were charged with settling the terms ol pardon granted in Popayan to the revolutionists. From the N. York Gazette, April 16. From Colombia. The brig Medina, capt. Beekman, arrived here yesterday, from Carthagena, whence she sailed on 30th March. Bolivar arrived at Trapiche on the 21st of Feb. with the centre of the southern division
j of operation ; the vanguard, under gen. Cor
dova having reached there the day previous. The t ear guard, under col. Mosquera, was expected there on the 23d. The Gaceta dc Colombia of the 8th ult. contains a long circular from gen. Urdaneta, in which great complaints are made of thc, immense cost of the frigates Colombia and Cundenamarca, and the sloop of war Bolivar, all of which were built in the U. States. It concludes with an order from Bolivar that in future no persons shall make contracts with any foreign government, to build vessels for the gov ernment of Colombia, under the scve rest penalties; nor shall send any vessel now j in the service of the republic, to any foreign country to be repaired, under any pretext whatever. The Gaceta Carthagena of the 22d tilt, says 51 We have the satisfaction to state that Co-

It is a miserable thing lobe rich we avcrit not from experience, but from observation. Our ftier.d Solomon Southuich, mce published a poem entitled "Plcasutcs ol Poverty," and althougfTfcobody ever read mote than the first page, it was the best
thing Solomon ever did. It was the perver
silv of mankind, not the absence ol caloric
in the poem that prevented the " Pleasures of Poverty" from becoming immortal. We pity a rich man and why ? Because he is like the unlucky fellow who adorns the fu st page of the Almanac. Aries, the ram, is eternally jumping over his head, ready to
butt out his brains for the take of getting at his purse Taurus, the bull, is goring Dim with both horns to make him bleed freely; (Geminc generally fall to the lot of the poor man.) the claws of Cancer arc fastened on his breast is the shape of poor relations Leo, is couchant before him watching the opportunity to prey upon his possessions Virgo, is laying snares for his heart Libra, is weighing his losses Scorpio, is slinging him with ingratitude Sagittarius, transfixes him with the arrows of envy Capricornus, is bearding Mm with the spirit ol rivalry A quarius, (changing the sex) is keeping him in a hot whirlpool of routs, parties and balls to oblige a dashing wife, and money -wasting daughters; and to sum up his miseries, the slippery " Fishes" render his footing unstable, and his standing uncertain ; for they arc neither more nor less than the chances and changes of life. Who so hard-hearted as net
to pitty the rich man ?
Who
dow
house is broken into by robbers ? The rich man's. Who has his pocket cut out, and his coat spoiled in a crowd ? The rich man. Who is in doubt whether people are not laughing at him, in their sleeves, when they
arc calinir his dinner f The rich man. Who
adds to his trouble by every story which he adds to his house ? The rich man ; for the higher he ascends, the colder the atmosphere. A bank breaks and who sufTers? The rich stock holder and depositor. War blows his horn, and who trembles ? Why, the rich man, and yet the world envies the rich. Depend upon it, reader, the length of your face will always be proportioned to the length of your puree. If you live in a twostory house, be thankful, and covet not the loftier mansion of your neighbor. You but dishonor yourself, and insult your destiny, by fretting and repining. r
