But on this day doubtless Induced by very powerful mo tives, he voted to strike out that proposed duty, and thus to leave that article to the duty fixed by the former law ; and so too voted Mr. Rufus King, and Mr. James Barbour, Ec the senators from Massachusetts, kc. of purchasers ol public lands, and in relation to internal improvements The bill 44 to provide for the extinguishment of the debt due to the United States by the purchasers of public lands," passed the senate on the 5th April, 1824, but the yeas and nays were not called according to tl c statement of Niles' Register of the Oih April,and of the National Intelligencer of the 6th April. There docs not appear to have bt en any opposition in the senate to the fir in cifile of the bill.-aliough there was some (li nally abandoned) to the details. It cannot be ascertained hov) gen Jickson voted but it is presumed that he, Sc all the senators from the west, and south west, voted for the bill. If he did not, let those who know it, shew the foundation of their knowledge let them produce the newspaper of that fieriod, or the journal, in which the vote is stated.
