POETICAL ASYLUM THE PROVINCE OF WOMEN. BY HANNAH MOORE. As some fair violet, loveliest of the glade, Sheds its mild fragrance on the lonely shule, Withdraws its modest he.ul from public stht. Nor courts the Sun, nor seeks the glare of h&ht ; Should some rude hand profanely dare intrude, Aud ber its beauties from its native wood, Exposed abroad its languid colours fly, Its firm decays, and all its odours die. So Woman, born to dignify retreat. Unknown to tlourish, and unseen be great ; To give domestic life its sweetest charm ; With softness polish, and with virtue warm ; Fearful of fame, Unwilling to be known, Should seek bat lie iven appla lses aud her own ; Should dread no blame but that which crimes, inpart, The censure of a sHf condemning heart.

Harrishurg, while the legislature held their late session and made known his wants, and his claims upon the country, to several members. That he was furnished by several gentlemen of both houses of assembly, with letters of introduction to members of congress ; and provided with money and clothing by their liberality : That he went to Washington city, pi esented his letters was aided by Mr Forward of the lower house, in establishing his just demand upon his country for a pension ; that owing to some trifling circumstance he Was unable to sustain his claim, al

At length the provo-t fearing they would proceed to extrcmi ties, came out and addressed them on the duties of hospitality, and on the ancient and uniform character of the Scots for the exercise of that virtue , and concluded by raving, that he himself would prefer falling a victim to their fury, rather than elect anv person who had sought the asylum of his room" Tus was an appeal which no Scotchman could withstand, more particularly as it came from a man whose amenity of char actcr. and mild disposition hod. rendered him generally beloved. could be prevailed on to remove the apron and expose his throat ; but at length, when be did so, with much caution it was found to be in a per fectly whole state, there not being cven a scar visible ! Though Mr. Dundas had much reason to be delighted at having es caped unhurt, he was a little moitifi ed at the laugh which this adventure occasioned; and his chagrin was great lv increased when lie found he had to pay for the attendance of the medical gentlemen": which having
