From the If Stales Telegraih the six militiamen. Binns, and o thers, his associates, have charged Genl Jackson in terms, wilh the murder of the militia men executed at Mobile In the Press of the 1 2th of September, we were challenged to appeal to the War Depart ment, in the following terms : (We give the extract literally.) The Length of the Tour" Wc devoted a portion of our paper jf Monday to "General DufTGreen'sacc -ntoftheSix 3 Militiamen," and we trust we fully satisfied our readers, that the assertion he m kes, and which was before made by General Jackson, "that the Tennessee Militia were mustered into service for six months," is without foundation Bu we are willing to put this question at rest" by an appeal WE APPEAL TO THE WAR DEPARTMENT. General Green is on the spot, and we ask him to address a request to the Secretary of that department, for information Let him make the inquiry, in proper terms, and he will be furnished with a re ply, as no information is withheld, in any jNof the departments, which will vindicate xa citizen against unjust accusation or reproach. We do not hesitate to say, he will find on the records of the Department of War, evidence, that Governor. Blount of Ten nessee, applied to Mr. Madison in bo'.alf of the militia of that State ; part of which were the six murdered men ; that their term of service should not exceed THREE MONTHS as prescribed by the Laws of Tennessee, Mr. Madison, then President of the U. tates, directed that 11 THEY SERVE ONLY THAT TIME.' We now publicly call upon General Green to make this inquiry. If he docs not do it, it will be because he knows the facts to be as vje have stated. If he docs, and zve should be found in error, xve will muke amends ' This challenge produced the following correspondence : D. GREEN TO THE ADJUTANT GENERAL. Washington 3rh Seht 1827.
Sir It has been asserted in ihe Naiion-
aIntelligenccr that the records of the
proceedings in the case ot the 44 six militia men," executed at Mobile, were for warded by Mr. Madison to the Governor of Tennessee; audit has been more than insinuated that the cause was, that Mr. Madison disapproved of the course pursued by the commanding Geneial, on that occasion. I have, respectfully, to ask 1st Whether the original proceedings were so sent back ? Snd. Is there any correspondence bey , tween Mr. Madison and any other person relative to those militiamen, on file in your department ? If so, what was it ? 3d. Is there any order or record, on file in your Department, which discloses what was Mr. Madison's opinion relative to those men ? If so, what was it ? 4th. Were the records returned to the Executive of Tennessee? If so, for what cause ? 5th. Were the records, in similar ca ces, transmitted to the Executives of the, r States ? If so, for what cause ?
