From the Christian Advoca c IS? Journal Mr. Editor Having accidentally made a di-scoveiy, some years ago, which has been found by experience to he an important, one, 1 send you the following communication on the subject. Virtues of Water as a Medicine It is not generally known, that simple water, i e such aa nature affords in its purest state, pos3escs important medicinal properties. I s efficacy, r.owcvcr, as u remedy in diseases is indubitable : the many cases of colds and levers cured b) water alone, afford ampie testimony. Water, in its chemical relations, is a substance extremely peculiar Its power of combination is very ex. ccsivc, there being but few substances ot which it d.cs not act, and with which it does not coai bine Taken into the stomach, it dilutes the aciid bile, and assists the ,.pr ration of cathatttc medicines in clearing out the -whoie of the contents of : i t -stitic can aU that may be morbid and stagnant the it Being absorbed an 1 mixed with the bloo . it dilutes the whole circulating mass, com bines with the noxious mattes that are in it, and passing off freely by the shin, Lid neys and other emunctoi ivs, expels the viscid, sharp, and acrid humors liom the body. So convinced was the celebrated Dr. H ff.nan of its virtues, that he exclaims : 11 Ol alt the productions of nature or ail.
water cooks nearest inat universal remedy, so much slight after by mankind, but never discovered.'' D ctor I i- sot, of whom Mr Weslcv ' spe -ks. as a person of string understand ing, eten ive k-owicdge and deep experience, observes: " Oct of twenty sick persons who are lost in the country, more than twothiids might have been cured, if they were supplied with abundance of good water." Formerly, in many instances, water was denied persons sick with fcvcis. This error, though not entirely eradicated, is much less frequent than it has been in years past. Doctor Nathan Smith, professorof the theo yand pi actice of physic and surgery in Ya.c College, remai ks :
hen persons sick of typhus lever de
sire cold water to dink, it should never be denied them ; but they should be allowed to drink ail libitum." The important discovery is the manner of c Jmimsteruty the waier, which is, to give a gill evety twenty minutes, or half a pint every hall hour. Given thus, in fevers, forty-eight or sixty hours, it pioduces astonishing effects, in mitigating and removing them Indeed, its power is believed to be superior to any other medicine It should not, however, supersede the use of other remedies, but be given along with them While the skin is div and hot, it should always be given cold ; bot Yfn the b"dv is moist with sweat, it shou Id Le given lukewarm. S. "A French paper gives the following details with repect to the rapidity of communication by means of the telegraph At Paris, news arrives from I. isle, sixty leagues, or one bundled and eighty miles, in two minutes; from Calais, sixu -eight leagues, or two hundred miles, four minutes five seconds; from Toulon, three bundrt d and thirty miles, in thirteen minutes fifty seconds ; from Bayonnc, three hundred miles, in fourteen minutes ; from B-est, four hundred and fifty miles, in six mhutes five seconds; and fiom Slrasbun:, three hundred and sixty miles, in five minutes thirty two seconds.
