J The public should, on all subjects ol interest, be correctly informed, and as the first impressions arc generally the most lively, and apt, in many cases, to be the most lasting, and to prctcnt too busty a decision on certain recent transactions at thi post, which have I perceive, been but partially touched on, in some recent extracts from letters published in the papers of your city, I have taken the iibcity lo give you,, at this time, a lair and candid statement of the whole affair, as it occur red and progressed, in relation to the unfortunate affair of the 28th of May last. On the 12th of May, some thirty of the Leach and Sandy Lake Chippcways anived on a visit to this Agency, intending to remain no longer than to receive my in structtons, transact their usual business, and smoke the pipe of peace with such of the Sioux bands as might arrive in the nican time. Several chiefs and their bands, arrived on the 28th, and after my council with them, and the usual routine of business transacted, they departed, leaving but a Icvt of their young men behind. About 8 o'clock at night, and but a few moments after tattoo hud done beating, 9 ol the Sioux attacked one of the ChippcWay lodges (encamped in front of my house and directly under the guns of Toit Snelling.) and wounded eight of them severely, two having since died of their wounds. In consequence of this wanton and cowardly c induct on the part of the Sioux, I immediately notified their chiefs that they must, and should without loss of time, produce all those who were engaged in this unprecedented outiago on humanity, and unpardonable insult to my flag. They, accordingly, on the lollowing morning, sent in one, accompjnicd by an old man, who delivered himself up as a sacrifice in the place of his son, but was discharged immediately ; and during this day, by measures adopted by the commanding officer of this station. Colonel SnelHng, with a detachment of troops under the immediate command of Major Fowle, thirty Indians were taken, and nine out ol this number, p.nntcd out by one of their own people as being of the offending party. They were accordingly secured until the 29th, when the Chippcways were permitted to take all of them, if they desired but their magnanimity induced them to select but two, whom they conoid cred to be the most truiltv, marched them a few hundred yards from the fort, and shot them. '1 he day previous to this, however, one ol the war chiefs informed
me that most of the young nu n that had been sehctcd, were not guilty, and that, if I would wait until fie could no to ihc Little Rapids, a d y and a half march from this pot, that he would bring down four men whom he knew to be guilty, ami deliver them to the Chippcways himself I remarked to him that he might do so. but he must return at -he time appointed, which was the morning of the oi.uh. He left, and shortly after the appointtd hour, returned with two of themoniv, who were immediately delivered up by the Sioux in person to the Chippcways with the particular request that they might be received and executed in the same reamer, and on the same sfiot that the other two had been the day previous which request, after some little hesitation on the part of the Chippcways, was acceded to, andcatried into effect by them. Thus ended this truly interesting ?cenc. The prompt and decisive measuies adopted in relation
thereto, has had the Inst possible effect on both tribes and it is firmly heimved, that a similar breach of the peace w ii never occur again at this post. 1 havA the honor to be, your obedient servant. LAW TALIAFERRO, Indian Jgent, St. Peters. The Newark Eagie ays, " We have in our office a beet that mcastues twenty -seven inches in circumference, twentv-onc in length, and weighs IS pounds. One of our neighbors, (says the same paper,) showed us the other day a branch of an apple tree eleven inches long, which con tamed eighteen apples, aveiaging about eight inches in circumference. Lvcry man has a ri g ht to choose a name for his children, but we doubt whether a fa-her is justified in giving his son o ineff bly absurd an appellation as Jamc? IV chard Napoleon- Honaparte Peter AVinslow the son of a shoemaker in Maine. Wc recollect a father proposing
to name his son, Thomas Jefferson Madison Robinson Rowland Richardson, to which a fricivd recommended the addition of Uog-pciij Hoard-fence, and Wood pile.
