r INC E AWES, July 14, 1827. Celebration The anniversary of our National Independence was celebrated by the citizens ot this place wrh enthusiasm, the day was ushered in by a discharge of artillery from an eminence on which waved the flag of our country, and at noon, a procession was tormed at the hotel of General Lasselle, under the direction of Major J.' F. Snapp, Marshal of the day, which proceeded to the court house, where the Declaration of Independence being read by John Law, Esq an eloquent oration was pronounced by Moses Tabba, Esq. After which the procession returned to the hotel, where an elegant dinner had been provided for the occasion. Among the strangers was the Hon. T II. Blake, our representative to the next congress. Col. Francis Vigo presided, assisted by Saml Hill, as vice piesidcnt. After the cloth was removed, the following toasts were drank 1 The day Consecrated to independence by a free people. 2 The President of theU. States. 3 The Vice President and heads ol flonnrtments.

Mr. Blake rose and said, he was duly sensible of the compliment which the gentleman had just bestowed on him, and of the llattcring manner in which it had been received by the company, he returned his unfeigned thanks for the on merited act of kindness. He said it might be expected by some of the gentleman, that he would consider this an opportunity to give his views on the politics of the times, but he muted that a moments reflection wou d satisly every one that this was not an occasion suitable to such a purpose. As it h.d just been announced in one of the to.ista, this day was consecrated t liberty, it was the annual period which vc arc called on to devote to the memory of the gallant dead who achieved our independence. In greatful and affectionate attention to their few gallant comrades whom time has spared us, and in rejoicing that unuer the auspices of heaven we are still permitted to be a free and happy people. If under such circumstances he were to submit lus political opinions, infuse the bitter of party spirit into the effusions ot patriotism which was then freely flowing from the heart if he should in any manner interfere with those bonds of fraternal fuendship which all present seemed so cheerfully to acknowledge, he should consider himself highly culpable. He therefore looked to the indulgent feelings of the company for declining the effort, Sc hoped to be excused from any further remarks. J. C.
