rjjYCEjXjVE v'j June 6, 1 6 27 By the last mail, 1 received the fu st number of " The Amaranth, and Ladies MUcedany," published at Pittsburgh, by John C Andrews. It is neatly printed in quarto form ; the selections are judiciously made, and the original matter discover taste and point. The fi st number may be seen at the W. Sun office, where subscription will be received Terms S in advance, per annum printed semimonthly. The Madison paper of the 7th inst. says " A very severe hail storm passed through the north part of this county on Sunday night last. The fruit trees .nd forest, are literally striped of their leaves. Many of the hail stones arc said to have ben as large as goose eggs, Ec the ground almost coveted with them." Fourth of July The citizens of this place, and of the county, are solicited to meet this evening at 7 o'clock, at the Inn of John C.Clark, to make suitable arrangements for honoring the birth day of our Independence. ONE. Vincennes, June 6, 1327. Communicated Having heard inquiries made, by the citizens of this county, relative to Mr. Judah's opinions concerning the improvement of the Wabash In answer to which, permit me to say, that I have repeatedly heard Mr. Juiiah express hi3 opinions in favor of all the proposed improvements, and that
warmly and zealously. I have also heard Mr Judah aver, that if he is elected as one of the Representatives of Knox county, he will give his sincere support to all measures he may believe calculated to improve the Wabash navigation, be those measures brought forward, or supported by whomsoever they may. A VOTER OF KNOX. Mr. Stent Permit one of your constant readers, through the medium of your paper, to inquire of Mr Thomas McClurc, whom you have announced as a candid Uc for the Legislature, if he is not likely to run foul of the Constitution o our state, should he be elected : and wKcnuir he will not then hold two lucrative olTLcs ? See ait. 11, sec. 13, No person shall hold mere than one lucrative office at the same time." ?c Again, Art 3, sec. 20, ' Nr person holding any office under the auihoiity of the President of the United States, or of this state, militia officers excepted, shall be eligible to a scat in either branch of the General Assembly, unless he resign his omce previous to Ida election, ,: fcc And again same art sec. 26, 41 No person who hereafter may be a Collector, or holder of public money, shall have a scat in either house of the General Assembly, until such person shall have accounted for, and paid into the treasury, all sums for which he may be accountable." This is plain language A Plough Boy. The first steam boat launched upon the western waters, was built at Pittsburg, in 1811. The following short extract is from that excellent little work, " Cincinnati in 1826." "The whole number cf steam boats, v:hich have nuv gated the western waters, since their fhst introduction, is two hundred and thirty-three A very small number of these, were built at New York and Philadelphia ; the rest w etc launched upon the wa'crs of the Oh'o. 11 The fo. lowing table will si cw the number bui t in each successive year, from the construction cf the fust: In IS 11, I In 1820, 10 1314, 1 ISC I, 2: IS 15, 2 1822, 13 1816, 3 1823, 15 1817, 7 1821, !6 1818, 25 1S25, 27 1SI9, 34. 1326, 56 " Of the whole number of steam boats built in the west, 90 have been lost or destroyed in tho following manner, viz : 28 struck on snags; 6 were burnt; 1 stove by the ice ; I sunk by another boat ; and the remainder worn out. There arc now 143 steam boats, carrying about 2-i.COO tons, running upon the western waters: of these, 48 were built at Cincinnati; 35 at Pittsburg; 10 at New Albany ; 7 at Ivlarictta; 5 at Louisville; 4 at N York, and the residue at various points on the Ohio, the engines for which have nearly
all been furnished by Cincinnati and Pitts

Mystery Unravelltd Some time in the latter part of i 324, or beginning of 1825, (wc believe) a horse v.vs found dead in the woods in the vicinity of Cayuga lake, and a pair of saddle bags near him, cut open and i .Med It was then supposed that the owner of the ho'se, whose name was Jstse Strang, had been robbed and murdered, and hi body thrown in the lake, and much time and pains were ta ke:i by hundreds of people in dragging the lake in search of the body. Fiom that time until last Friday, there had been no intelligence of the lost man. On that dav, a trcntlcman from that country, went to the jail in this citv, and the moment he saw Strang, the supposed murderer of Mr. Whipple, he knew him .'o he the person before meu'.toncd. and on Charging him with the fact. Stumg acknowledged it, and laughed bcartlv at the idea of dragging the lake in search of him. The reason for his practising this deception, is said to be that he had forged several drafts (one of w hich was ccshed in this city ) and lie wished to be thought dead, to avoid being discovered.
