more extensive region of country than
the Ohio canal ; a region of country but
little known except to those who have traversed the rich and beautiful valley cf the
winding Wabash, which from the com

really is, but which the lactof its having already been ascended in the spring sea

ground, and supposed navigable lour months of every yaar by steam boats, a
distance of about four hundred and titty miles, fully establishes. The head of river navigation or beginning of their canal, is by intelligent men generally fixed at or near this point, and will be in length across the table land to Fort Wayne, or Oliio line, about one hundred and twentymiles, where ere long it is supposed that state will continue her Dayton canal line to Maumc Bay, not only for the purpose of finding a choice of markets for the pro duce of the Miami country, but as a matter of policy, by which to secure from the states of Indiana and Illinois, tolls upon their products in passing her territory, which in those seasons of the year when the Maume river is tco low, (say nine months,) would be compelled to take her canal. A small brigade of United States Civil Engineers have been, and perhaps still

an expenditure of six millions, the interest of which and gradual liquidation, must be derived from tolls on ihc transit of property carried through it : whereas the latter opens, beside the tract of about one hundred miles lying along the banks, the whole Wabash country of some five hundred and fifty or six hundred miles, to which add the White rivers, of not much less extent, to be connected as before mentioned, and which together will not cost (there being lour locks required) exceeding one fourth or at most one third: thereby enabling Indiana to carry at one half or two thirds less than her neighbor state : thus my premises are established. The eastern half of Illinois, the Wabash and White river parts of Indiana, are decidedly the most desirable divisions of these two interesting states, and will be found, when the census of one thousand eight hundred and thirty shall be taken, to contain an increase of population that will astonish all who have not made themselves acquainted with the growth of these members of the Union : it will be found that the current of emigration for seven years past, has set more strong in this direction than any other ; and now that the Indian title has been extinguished to nearly all the lands, will greatly increase. The lands generally, and particularly the prairies of the Wabash, are not surpassed, perhaps not equalled ; the latter contains a strong mixture of sand, highly favorable to the growth of cotton, and tobacco. These prairies are long and narrow, abound in springs of good water, arc easily put into cultivation, and when we odd, inexhaustible beds of stone coal

On the morning of the 8th, the troops were sent to the rcsp ctive dtpots, and the Portuguese Guuials commanding these corps were sent to Valladolid. The number of these troops is about three thousand. This evening an order was forwarded to General Morct, to deliver to
