Russia The arrests. Thcic is not a

noble lamiiy in Russia, with the exception of those about the court, who has not a member implicated in the conspiracy. They arc arrested every day, and sent to St Petersburg'!, with their arms chained behind them, in carts, guarded by Cossacks others who only talk of the affair, are arrested, and sent off in the same way.

Rhode Island. On the island of Rhode Island, which is eleven miles long, and five miles broad, there are 700 miles of double wall, (separating plantations and fields) from 4 to five feet high, most of which is handsome and in excellent order. This wall has all been built within 190 years, anil the expense of building it is estimated to have cost mote than the whole island would sell for, land and buildings The wall, if it were in one direct line, would reach from the town of Newport, on Rhode Island, to Michigan territory. The lots on the island are under a high state ol cultivation, and it may be ttuly said to have an aspect like the garden of Eden. In this island, there arc 55 square miles ; and perhaps in no part of the world are there more products of the eaith raised for man and beast, than arc on this island, annually, within the same compass of ground Resides all this, it is

as healthy a place as any in this country, and a more delightful summer lesidcncc cannot be found on the globe. Xevj York. During the year 1825, 425 350 children have been taught in the common schools, 22,410 more than the preceding year. There are 7.773 school districts; reports have been received from 7,117; 131 new districts have been foimed dining the year; and the sum of g 182,790 has been paid to the several disUicts from the state treasury In the year 1816, there were but UO,106 children taught in schools where the public money was applied The amount of the capital of the comtnon school fund is gi .3 i9,6S 46. and the revenue actually received from this fundin 1825, was 831,615, 41. In addition to w hich, the constitution provides that the proceeds of all lands belonging to this state, which shall here

after be sold or disposed of, shall belong to the fund for the support of common schools.' These lands are, according to a report of the surveyor general, compu

ted at 858,090 acres, and valued at 409,418 dollars. Flour, pork, &c. arc now transported

from the state of Ohio to the city of New I York, via lake Erie, the canal, and the

Hudson, in about 12 days. Xorth Carolina. The Charlotte Journal states, that " a gold mine has been discovered about half a mile from that town, which promises to be both extensive and rich." Ohio. The corner stone of one of the locks of the Miami canal was laid near Cincinnati on the 17th ult in ample masonic form, in the presence of a great number of the craft and others. Major gen. Gaines, one of the fraternity, was in the piocession. Great Britain I? Ireland. The distress among the laboring classes, as well for the want of employment, as because

of the high price of provisions, and the misery of the ptople, in many places, has almost driven them to madness Many thousands are in a state bordering on starvation but we have " bread enough and to spare," if England would receive it from uk, Siain has agreed to pay the dey of Algiers 6000,0-o reals as the price of peace. The barbatian was very laconic to the u adored" king " pay me six mil lions, said he, and I'll let you alone." Greece.' We have Umber confused accounts as from this country and whether or not Missolonghi has fallen, we cannot pretend to say. To publish the speculations about it, would uselessly take up room. There is a report; that Great Britain, Fiance and Austria, have agreed on dictating to Turkey, terms of accommodation with Greece wc do not beliee it.

Mexico. A letter from Natchitoches, dated April 17, says that 1,000 men were on their march to Nacogdoches, for the purpose of expelling vagabonds and desperadoes from the province of Texas. Canada. The Lachine canal at Monti eal is finished, and the first boat parsed through it in two hours, on the 8th May. This canal, by dividing the rapids, makes the navigation easy and secure Very animated political discussions are going on in Upper Canada, and the measures ot govei ument are spoken of with great severity in the newspaper.

great Church, but the doors being forced and most of his men being killed or wounded, he sprung the mine, which destroyed

both that and the citadel, ovcwhelming himself ann 2000 Turks in one tremenduous ruin. The enemy having now entire possession of the hard fought town, wc collected about three thousand of the brave fellows who had fought so well, and after a hard contest, we succeeded in cutting our way out, leaving them in possession of a heap of ruins, which I have learned has cost Ibrahim nine thousand of his best troops in the last attack alone. I joined Gen Gouras on the 1 2th ; with 2500 wren, 1 50 prisoners, 6 cannons, and 9 standards taken from the enemy duiing the last fatal attack. Wc brought the body of ht.
