VIA'CEXXES, june 10, 1826. I have been requested to announce Jr. William Johnson, as a candidate for the Lcgislatutc, at the August election. I am authorized lo say that Mr. Fr. Mahl, will, if elected, again serve as a Director of the Poors House. I have not been authorized to announce any person yet as a candidate for Coroner, Mr. Roseman, (the present incumbent.) and Mr. Hamy Almy, aic spoken of as candidates for that office. COMMUNICATION. fourth of July The 50th anniversary of the Independence of America, is fast approaching. How s nil the day be celebrated? is a question repeatedly asked. To settle which, t' c citizens generally arc invited to attejjl at Mr. J C. Clatk's Reading room, on Wcdncsd v evening next, the I 4th inst. at sun down, and determine for themselves. June 8, 182G. ONE. communication. Much oedit (and mtue is due; to Air. Mc Lean the PostM r General, for the activity and cnenv he has exhibited in the discharge of the laborious duties of his olnce but the v arc it regularities in this qiuuter, which, probably, aic iv.)t known to him, or they certainly would have been corrected. I allude to the manner in which the mail is conveyed between this place, and Louisville. II I am not misinformed, the Post-Master General has recently contracted for the transportation f tho maihi'i &tag(s. from Louisville, (Ky ) to St. Louis, (Mo.) obligating the contractors to make the trip in five days. This arrangement, which was to have betn put into operation on the first of May last, would have been salutary and impot tant to travellers, bt-nrficial to our citizens, and, an accommodation to the community. The active and cntei prising contractor on the western route, (from Vinccnnes to St. Louis,) has had lor several weeks, his lint ul stages in op- -ation. All his labor, however, has been fruitless the mail from Louisville being still conveyed on horses Urn, breaking the chain of travelling communication between Kentucky and Missouri, and causing vexation and disappointment, not only toother contractors, but to th se sttaogeis who have arrived here, in th: full xpectation of being conveyed in Vc tto.il stage to the east. I am informed that the Ohio is at present extremely low. so much so, that it is difficult to navigate in Steamboats The probability is, that it will continue, s until the tall of course mu:h ditVic.uhy an I delay will occur to travcileis in their route, to, and from the west therefore, prompt, and efficient measures should be immediately adopted, and enforced, as regards the mail stages other vise, the public will he si t i usly dUappointrd, the department censured, and the benefits tesuSting to the community, be merely noxuin d. L. Greece H be recollected that at cur as aJ ices, the Tu.ksand Egypti ans ucie, preparing for another assault upon Misso uvghi. by s 'a and land It will rejoice ou f ietub now to learn, that letters fitm M ss rionghi of the 5th March, contain the infotma ton that Ilvahtm Pacha has been di iven bom the siege of that place. On the 2St i ot Fcbi uary he attacked the town but was repulsed with great loss The same letter states that 7,000 men wete lost by the Turks. The Greeks lost 500. A letter from Corfu, of the 7th March, states that the cap:. Pacha had quitted 1brahim and sailed for Constantinople, and was pursued by Miaulis Ibrahim h id caused several of the chiefs under his command to be beheaded The departure of the capt Pacha leaves the sea completely free, and succour can be afforded to Missolonghi The Austuan Observer reluctantly admits that the (irceksitave repuLcd the Tin ks, Sc succeeded in victualling that foi tress- " These pleasant articles of news appear to be supported ttom various quarters. The Gteeks fought with resolution to conquer or die and the slaughter ol the Turks was dreadful. A French colonel Selves, who belonged to the imperial puardof Napoleon, employed by the pacha of Egypt, has surrendered himself and his troops, at discretion, to Colocho lii, at Tripolizzi. At Corfu, the Greek cruisers visited some vessels, sent fiom Alexandra for the lorea, under English colors, and confiscated all the Turkish property they had on beard. The lord commissioner of the Ionian Islands honorably refused to interfere. Niles' Rer;.
