VIXCF.XXl.S, may 20, 1826. The Wabash is again on the tall, but is yet in good navigable order. Trade with Mexico. The Missouri intelligencer, of ihc 1 4th April, (published at Franklin.) says : u Wc are happy to announce the arrival of a number of our enterprising lellow citizens, from a trading expedition to Santa Fee. They have brought, in exchange for articles taken out, mules, furs and specie. A considerable number, we understand, will remain in New Mexico, where they have been a considerable length of time. In consequence of the fjreat quantity of goods taken to t hat market, bales arc slow, Ahich renders it necessary to icmain a considerable time in the country to dispose of all the ai tides taken, to advantage. 41 Wc understand those just returned, mt t with some little obstruction on their journey, by a par,.y of Shawnee India-. s. who tobbed them f a number o mules. ' A company of nearly one hundred person, (including all those lately returned.) will start fiom t!iis place and vicinity, in a few weeks for New Mexico. It is the intention of same of this patty to penetrate to some of the more remote ptovinccs, and to be absent several ears." A letter published in the St. Louis Republican of the 20th April, dated Santa Fee, Feb. 7, remaiks : u In a shott tim?, I mean to set out upon a j mtu-iy to Hiscay and Sonora, and whc.e else, I know not yet 1 am paiticulariy anxious to visit some of the ports and towns on the Gulf of California, Sc to ascertain th- truth of a report that is current here, that Rntisn Sc other merchants, are begining to introduce merchandise inthis country, by way of the Gulf of Cali fornia, where, it is said, they can be landed as cheap as in Philadelphia, and then brought here on mule, at a less expense than goods cr.n be brought from Missouri. Indeed, if tnis be true. B'itish merchants can Sc will, undoubtedly, command nearly all the trade here, inas ouch a? they w iii only have to p.iv dir. its in Mexico at least, they will have the advantage of our merchants in ali articles of British manufactii; It happens, however, that many of the articles most in demand err, 'are extensively manufactured in the United States, from materials of .ur own growth; as t instance, coarse Sc line cotton stuff-., of v:tid .us descriptions, punted, colored, and white. Coarse woollen stuffs might be brought here to advantage, also, it they were not prohibited. I suppose, full half of the goods sold here for much profit, consist of cotton goods, nranufactui cd in the U. Sia es, and of this, the far greater portion is white and brown shirtings and sheetings, such as usually cost from 12 to 25 cents a yard, in our cities on the Atlantic. Of this article, there is a very great consumption in this territory, k t he state next below, which I have no doubt, QwiH continue trreat !v to increase. But it happens, unluckily, that this very article is so excessively tased by the Mexican g overnment, as almost to effect its exclusion ; for instance, all the white slutTs are subject to a duty of about 1 1 cents a yard, (not square yaids.) so that all the coarsest kind pay duty very nearly equal to Ihe original cost at ou. factoi'ics." The House of Kepi ccntatives has disagreed by a large nujoiity, to the Senate's amendment of the Judiciary Bill. "Whether either of the two h ulies will yield the point, and if either, which of them, are questions that canot be answered with confidence : but we incline to the opinion, that the hill will not be lost by the adherence of each House to the ground it has taken. Some change is so imperiously required, that it will probably be found, in the end, to be the opinion of a majority in both Houses, that no change ot the system can well be for the worse. Xat. Int.

On the 1 2th thcie was a smart skirmish, in which the Turks lost a number of their best men $. officers, and fell back to the village. About 7 o'clock next morning, the contest began with the out posts, whi'di fell back to the line. A large body of Mamelukes were charged by our ca ulry headed by Col. Berton, and totally routed. Our liflc men in front picked out the officers as they advanced to their pns. Our artiliei y wasscived by French and I'ngiibh volunteers, wiio had orders not to lire the 'Forks were within 2C0 yards. The enemy now endeavoured to turn our left w ing, but were received at the point of the bayonet by Gen. La Fayette, our second in command. The battle now raged aitng the w hole line with the most deadly liny. The village of St. John was three times taken and retaken, with great slaughter ; their second in command fell in the last attack, when they gave up the contest, leaving 800 dead on the spot, besides pris oners and wounded. Gen. Gouras, at the heat! of the Corinthian briga.de, canied the village of St. Anne's, and oulcicd a general attack, with the whole force, when the Turks were completely routed, and fled in every direction, kaing ;0UO dead, 90u prisoners, 4( () wounded, 2 Generals killed. 1 1 officers woimdul, 25 taken, with 9 cannon, the Pacha's tent, 14 baggage and ammunition waggon?.
