Zettere From the 1st to the 1 5th A 1 pril, no less than 20,000 letters were received by the differed vessels, and distributed from the post office in New York. British cannon Fourteen pieces of ordnance 9 and 12 pounders captured onboard the British fleet, ot the memorable victory on lake Erie have recently been brought to this city, and arc piled up at the south end of Mr. M'Clurg's foun dry, in Fifth street. We understand these pieces were sold by order of the govern
ment, and that our founders arc about, to
melt them down, Sc mould them into pot
and grates and stoves, and other useful
and peaceful implements sad destiny for
the 41 loud mouth'd dogs of war,' of the most warlike nation upon earth ! But is this the best use we can make of them ? Converted into the articles we have named, they will be useful indeed, but will immediately pass into oblivion, which our enemies in war uould desire. Can the ingenuity and liberal patriotism of our townsmen devise and adopt no plan by which to picscrve these trophies of the Jit st meeting between an American and a Bii'isb fleet Pittsburgh Gaz. Origin of Frahk";g letters In the 23d volume of the parliamentary history is the following vciy curious anecdote concerning this privilege It c urred in the debate on. the post-oflicc bill, in the year 1660; col. Titus reported the biU for the settlement of the post-office, with the amendments. Sir Walter Earl delivered a pro ho, for the letters of all mem -bers of parliament to o tree, during their sitting Sir Hcneage Finch, said u it was a poor mendicant proviso, and Ixl w the honor of the house." Mr. P y m spoke also aga-.nst the povis: Mr Bunck'cy, Mr Boscowen, si G. Downing, and Serjeant Carlton lor it ; the latter sying, the council's letters went free. The question being called tor, the speaker sir Ilarbottl . Giimstone, was unwilling to put it, saying, he was ashamed of it : nevertheless the proviso was carried, k made part of the bill, which was ordered to be engrossed." The lords subsequently disagreed to this proviso, and it was ultimately thrown out At a subsequent period, however, both house did not feel it to be 44 below their honor" to secure for themselves this exemption from postage. pendicular manner. Lar ge stones weighing from three to four hundred pounds, were thrown thirty rods, and one, which our informant thinks will weigh between five and ten hundred, was thrown about eight rods. The force must have been great, as the explosion was heard at considerable distance. The fissures in the rocks, ?t the bottom, and on the sides of the cavity, are barely large enough to admit a man's hand. The cause of this explosion is unknown. Some suppose it to have been effected by water but this is not very probable, although there was, undoubtedly, a considerable quantity of w ater. Yet ti.e explosion being instantaneous, there must have been some invsible cause of eruption. It furnishes a subject for the investigation of the philosopher, and cannot fail to excite the attention of the curious. Vermont Pat.
