44 RAGS." Our motto over
this article may be considered of
but little consequence, and our subject at best but a ragged one. Rags give to some people an involuntary disgust and many are almost ashamed to save or meddie with an article so revolting to their pride and to feel proud ol that for which we should blush & be ashamed. Now, 12 ounces of rags will af ford stock for a quire of writing paper 6 ounces for a spelling book 8 ounces for a testament one pound and a quarter for a common bible and fnUr pounds and a half for a large quarto bible. Should not the prudent matron, then, who might in a short time save, rags sufficient lor one or all of these, feel a conscious patiiotic pnde in the reflection, that she bas contributed so much for the benefit of the country, and to the great stock of information? And
ought not the wasteful prude to
blush and be ashamed, who wan
tonly sweeps the same quantity of
materials into the fire, or through
indolence throws them out of the dor to rot? Most certainly and we are almost persuaded that many of them would be. ashamed, diil thev but rationally consider, that the pieservation of all our jepubliea-i institutions our civil V Sld religious liberties the arts & sciences and even the rapid spread of the light of the gospel through the dark and benighted corners of the earth, and are all dependent upon RAGS or the wise and patriotic policy ot saving
them.
The individual pecuniary profit v on saving rags appears indeed trifling yet it is something, and 'a penny saved is as good as a penny earned." Bnt when we consider tlu amount collectively it swells into a handsome sum The ta that double the quan tit v of UAGS might he saved with a little care, has led us to make the above remarks; and with all due respect we would beg leate to recommend our ragged
