In the few remarks which wc made a week or two since, in regard to a communication in the Indianapolis Gazette, we hazarded our own opinion, that John Ewing's letters on the Improvement of tllcvyabash, were wiittcn by himwith a view'to " a particular object and fiom no regard to the interest of the West. His letters we primed, it is true, and wc were heartily rejoiced when we had finished them, lor three reasons first, they wci every badly written secondly, he did not understand the subject and thirdly, we believed that they were intended to further ceih'in ambitious yicsvs which this gentleman has had in his minds eye, ever since he was elected to the senate. x That our nasor.ins was correct, wc prove in two ways frst, that his letters were badly wtiiten, end that he did r.ot understand the subject, by 'he letters themselves secondly, that they were written t bene hi himself, and nut the public, by his owl acknowledgment (not intended for the public eye,) in the extract which follows, taken from Hie Indiana Farmer, and to which we 'would ;articularly call our readers attention. Wc would, however, inform our Hro ther Editot at Sa'.em,that he has mad-; a small mistake in printing the sentence " Tiry are btgnning to talk of mc for Congress" There aic tvn s.vintV "errata" a we printers say, which alteis b :th the sense and the truth of it, and which we would request him to correct as soon as possib'e For " they are revd cm." and for " me" rea 1 " myself the semence wilt then read thus, 4k I am begining to talk of myself for Congress " this is what Mr Fwing meant, and wc are sorry to s o his meaning perverted our friend at Salem must be a little more careful in fu ure, or he may do Mr. lowing an itijmv. From the ItuVana Farmer Some two or three weeks sinc e, we published the last number of Mr. LI wind's series of letters, a id like the editor ol the Sun, believe thru our readers are heartily 'ire 1
of the Subject. As we stated in our paper,
at the time we commenced puinismng nis -pieces, we can look upon him in no other light than a high hindrd ;jjlcr sacker making the impiovcmcnt of the "XVabasb, the const uciion of a canal, Sec his hnhby. Since ttut time, however, the opinion as then express-d by us, in rela
tion to his motives has been mucn stitrigthencd by the circumstance of his having sent the paper corUaimng his two list pieces, to a particubr poli'ical fiicnd o! his in our countv, on ihe. margin of w hich Was written, u Thru arc beginiig to talk of mc for conr ess" Here, seems to be the bait ; they talk of him for congress ! Much labour and fatigue in wiiting and saying many intent things have at last brought Mr. lowing into notice Hut how disinterested he seem ! Ilow hard he labouis for the public gcd ! Hut at last he happens to leak on:, u they talk of me for congress !" What a wor.deiful effect his Writings have produced ! Wc would here ask out readers if such a procedure wears the appcatancc of disinterested patriotism ? ov whether there is any tl.ir.g in such an expression con ing from him -elf. calculated to make an enlightened public believe that he (Logan like ) " w :m! 1 not turn on hh heel for the Presidency The Yinccnncs Thespian So cietvh;ivrin reheual th eve biatVtl comedv of ihc 7r tinker' and the - Honest Thieve.' for the aftcqmv'o thew expect to play on Monday evening, the 2(th in

It will be reeollec ted that this work was undertaken by the government as an expert ment and we ate informed, that it has considerably improved the channel on that bar ; but it is apprehended, by numbers who have examined it. that it will cau?c another bar to furm immediately below, or not far distant.
