France, thc object of Which is to watch over thc maintenance of the tranquility cf Europe. In this Intelligence there arc three things worthy of remark : 1. The silence kept upon England, to which such an alliance would seem to attribute principles different to those of the other powers. 2. Thc no less singular silence upon thc compact of the holy alliance, whose principles of justice, charity and religion, are sufficient tics to thc European govcrnments, by placing the great and small states upon the same rights. 3. The remarkable anxiety that it would seem is manifested for the maintenance of tranquility, at a moment when the nations are very submissive and very peaceable, and when the only elements of fermentation are thc stagnation of commerce, thc disproportion between the necessities and thc resources, the weight of taxes and other inconveniences which attach to political institutions, and not to the opinions k sentiments of thc people. Nevertheless, as our journals are under the censorship,
and this intelligence is presented under
monarchical conns, some attention should be paid tu i Journal des Dcbats.
