v report is in circulation here, that gcnl Robert M. Evans, who was announced in last week's paper as a candidate for Congress, has declined holding a poll. I give the report as it is circulating should it be untrue, the general can correct it. To Correspondents. I have to ask their indulgence the present size of my sheet affovds but little room for electioneering matter ro soon as I receive a supply of paper their essavs shall have a place.
Tj the Voters nf 'the First Congressional District of Indiana. Fcllorj Citizens I am a candidate to fdl the vacancy in the loth Congress, occasioned hv the death of the late Judge Prince anil among the considerations wliich induce me to ( f-'r my serices at this time, it is far fro n being the least, tint I have been urged to it bv many persons who voted against me at the lute election, some of whom acted under representations which they are now satisfied were malicious and unfounded. Although the service of the successful candidate, by virtue of this election, will terminate with the next session of Congress, the subjects which will probably come before him, in common with the rest of the nation's Representatives, render it the most important of any that has ever happened to the state. Among those subjects, judging from the present aspect of political affairs, the

As a private individual, mv choice for President of the United States is IIf.nky Clay .:ul I sh ill art ihdc vote for the electoral ticket wlich is pledged to support aim ; but as tyjitr R .'ir.'sentativ, i'i ca - I should be thct d to C',;t'-vv, I si. all vote for thai furfo b ' fh- Preid nt who shut! n et ire th" FA etoral v tes of this state. And m making this pledge, 1 can do it the more cheerfully on tne present occasion, as all the Candidates for the Presidency have talents, patriotism, experience and public service- to recomm Mi l them, and the Representative of the jv-pie can, umhrsuch circumstances, have no scruples in yieKling to the will of the people. There is another subject, fellow citizens, to .vhich I wiuild also draw your scno is attention it is the imfirovmient of the tiarifali,;i f our river for 1 am well s atisr.cd that vve can nev er beco ne a prosperous people, unless this is vigorously and efficiently attended to. The three per cent, fund, which a wretched policy has expended, with but hule, if any benefit to the state, and which I reprobated i a the Legislature at the tinu it was adopted, w aid by this time if not disturbed, have been in a great measure ade piate to this object but now, our chief reliance uiust be oa the justice and liberality of Congress, before whom the subject should be brought at an e irly period, and supported bv eerv possible exertion My efforts heretofore in relation to this important coucern, are I presume, a sufficient guarantee for the future. 1 am fellow citizens, Your obedient servant, THOMAS H.
