combined with the laudable attempt of the govennnonts to accomplish the present object, that it might ne possible that d hv a

joint act of the two states, would with the j co-operation of the governments, not only

open the obstructions at tnis poitu, uui open a communication at the Portage p int to the ' Maume. With such an object in vuw we ordered a survey ol a canal route on both sides the Wabash. The following is a descriptive view of our routes as surveyed: 1. The first canal site was surveydon ihf IHi.inUside as exhibited on the map.

To bj uken out at the -Lntle rock rip- j od around, ai

cly foundation to form a juncum with the Wabasu at the foot of ihe 'Vite river ripple: a distance ol 8 miles 3 quarters and 30 poles, (15,565 yards)-giv-ing a fall in the wnolc length after allowing for the descent of the rive of 15 leet 6 inches clear ol back water; de. ucting for the bed of Prairie creek and a ravine tii.....i.ru which it nasses one mile say

(76) yards) these will remain to be cut j 1 3,8 5 y aids which it is calculated to a-1

verges I leet wide by laanua uau deep" producing 427 955. cubic yards, estimated to cost for culling at 10 cents, will b; 842,955,50 cents. But including i. .,.t..c iihiitmetits and cutting.

Probably so ne rocks may require in the j end double that sum, say S '5,59 1. 1 he j

cost of this route has been estimated however, at something less, say 87,000, bat we are disposed to give it eveiy impartial view. 2. The second site was surveyed on the Lidum side; to be taken out above the Mttle rock Tipple and to form a junction with the White river, about half a mile above the mouth and at the foot of the first ripple in White river. The route lor this canal by measurement is sis and a h df miles and eight poles, cross a pretty considerable cypress pond and a coosuh-.able quantity of oerllwcd Kiound, the greater part a solid clay . i .Mr.,- n.ul about one aide of a deep

gravel and a sandy soil well ca'uulated for a canal, the whole distance in yards say 11.434, at tlie same rate of the lame vi ith and depth, to complete the canal vou.dcost g66,364. 80 cents, deducting one half mite for a ravine. Should a canal be taken out at the first point there will exist a s rnu difficulty in opcing u channel at the Little roc-. the route afterward is good. But should a canal betak-n th; second route to sc cur- it from u ods; from the sandy and cr-tv-lly soil and ponds, it would probably require as mucn to effect the object - ., hp 1 ;inois side The Little rock

well calculated for abutments both for and discharging the water

and forms a valuable site for water works.

miles alvuit three miles on Indiana side,

about an equal distance on each side, and will avoid all the difficult passes through the sho ils and ripples. The advantages

to be derived from wa'er works at each

for the two former. We found hut little variation in the width ol the Wabash river above Sc below the mouth of White river; generally between 3 and lOv) ya'ds between the bank. The map that accompanies this rcpoit will exhibit with its references a general -iew of the survey and examinations made by us. The accounts of our expenditures Sec. are duly certified and endorsed With sentiments of great respect and esteem, we have the honor to be your fcxceHicnccs obedient s-rvt's. WILLIAM POLKE,
