Ry an express winch anived here this ! mot ning, and which left fort Atkinson, a
lew day-) since, we have received the fol lowing important intelligence, which we hasten to lav belorc our readers in an extra sheet. The great length ot time which the public mind has lahoi ed undei anxious suspense on this subject, will greatly cshanco the interest i the following statement. We p'edge ourselves to our readers that it is substantially u ue, though some of the more mii.ute details may hereafter require con ction. It is already kno.vn loour l eaders, that in consequence of the defeat of gen. AshIcy and his party, by the Auriekarces col Lcavensworth, the commandant at toit Atkinson moved promptly with th.e whole of the-disposable loice under his command, to protect the general in his ascent
of the river, and to chastise the Indian for their daring outrage. He embanked at fort Atkinson on the 2 2d June, with six companies of U. Status troops, amounting to about 250 men. At Cedar fort- about 350 miles above fort Atkins m, lie was jomedby 100 Sioux Indians who pretended to be friends, and about 50 miles below the Aurickarce viii tge, receieda reinforcement of aoout 6 ) of ihe m n attached to the Yedow Stone expedition. The Sioux being mounted, proceeded by land, whilst the whites continued to ascend by water, until within about a davs march of the hostile village. Here Uie tioops were disembarked, with the exception of a sufficient number to each boat to conduct them forward On the mach towards the village, the Sioux preceded our tioops, and had Sequent skirmishes with scouting parties of she Auriekarces, in which 15 of the latter were killed. Wnen within a few miles of the enemies position the troops halted to await the arrival of the b-.'ats, in order tha they might disembark the artillery attached to the expedition (which consisted of two six pounders and a howitzer) and also to strengthen their party by the acquisition of the b ats crew. On the night of the 9th August, our troops took up their position almost within sight of the enemies defences On the morning of the 10th, they proceeded against the villagestwo in number, one called the upper, and the other the lower village The distance between them we have not ascertained. Two companies under the command of capt. Rennet Riley, were assigned to the attack of the upper village. The rem under of the forces commanded by col Lcavensworth in person directed their operation-, against the lower one. The attack was commenced at a shoit distance, and the artillery directed against the lower village did great execution. Against t tc Tinner viilaire, it is understood that the o.v rations were les effective, the srua tin of the ground affording no advantage of position. The enemy, it is understood evinced crre;t spit it in thvir defence for a co:isi !- crable time, but as ih feat w as mevita'oie, thev eventually hoisted a while flag in token of s'irrendsr.
The firing having ec?.scd, the chiefs of the Ami karees, came cut with presets of buff-aloe robes, and other tokens of submission, and sued for peace. it was the act of two members of the Missouri lur company, the only persons known to nave been left in the villages. During the conflict, our auxiliatics the Sioux, b haved lit. Instead ol joining in the conflict, and suppoiting oui troqis, they were, during the battle, engaged in plundering the corn fields ot tiie enemy. Having loaded themselves with this species of plunder, they stole ail the noises belonging to the U. Slates tioops, and ten of those belonging to gCn. Ashley's company and made a precipitate movement no one knows whither. We have tl e satisfaction to state, that on our side, none were killed, Seoul two wont. ded the enemy iost about 100. Before our next tegular publication day, we hope to obtain further details on this interesting subject. The same express tells us, that a day or two before he left tort Atkinson, a rumor prevailed there, brought by a l'tench trader fiom the upper country, that a few days after the descent of oui troops, our worthy and highly respected fellow citizen, general Ashley, was killed by the Indians We moat since?e;y wish that this report may prove altogether unfounded, almost the entiie population of the slate will j , in with us.
