The last mail furnished nothing of any
importance respecting the afTurs of Fi ance and Spain, in an official shape, but a plentiful supply of reports, some of which I have in this day's paper. I have been requested to state, that Mr. John Collins has withdrawn his name from the list of candidates for Associate Judge. A report was in town yesterday that a party of the Missouii Fur Company returning from their winters hunt near the mountains, was attacked about 10 miles from the Crow Village by a body of Black Feet Indians. They were passing a narrow defile in the mountains, a small party attacked them in front and rear, while the revt threw down stones from the mountains; the two lealers Messrs Robt. Jones and Immcll were shot down first, the men finding themselves left without a commander took to flight and were cut to pieces bv the Indians. The company had about 25 packs of Beaver, horses, mules, traps 'kc. the loss of the company not mentioning Immcll , and Jon-s two of tht best tracers of the Missouri is very great. Mr. Win. Got den who was also of the party, had been sent on bcfoie to hunt, and the Indians let him pass them, he travelled about 600 miles alone through a trackless desent and arrived in safety at Fort Mandan. This statement depends on the asser tions of a man lately arrived from Ashley and Henrys expedition; and it accuracy is doubted by those best acquainted with the subject. Missouri Pefiuhlican. Since the above was in type, a second arrival has confirmed the melancholy report, we have not room for it this week, it shall be given in our next. Ed Sun.
tu.fal departs from her neutrality, and takes part in the quarrel, the treaty of alliance with England ceases to be of further force or virtue. Com. Adv.. FROM EUROPE. The ship Dido, Capt. Maxwell, has arrived at Philadelphia, from Liverpool, bringing London dates to the 23d of May. Nothing of moment had occured. The French advance slowly, but steadily; they meet no where with a cordial reception. Pampcluna, and St. Sebastians continue unmolested; the French appeared fearful of attacking those places. The garrison of Pampcluna made a sally with 1000 men, and 4 cannon, and after having captured many French troops retreated to the fortress without loss. It is positively affirmed in Catalonia, that Mina, with 5000 troops had entered La Cedargne, and had created great alarm. Marshal Moncey, was compelled to accept battle near Figueras, into the citidcl of which Mina threw some troops; but he afterwards crossed the Ter, and pursued his Guerilla system. Ballasteros, with a strong force, is mancevcring near Mina, and the two armies will keep the French in c leek. Whatever may have been the belligerant intentions of Russia, they seem to have been suddenly checked by an alarming dec aratmn, made by Mr. Bagot, the British Minister at St. Petersburg, viz "That the neutrality of England in the present contest between France and Spain, depended, entirely upon the circumstances of the other Powers of Europe not taking any part in the war." This confirms the original declaration made at the Congress of Verona. Mr. Perkins' engine has at last received the approbation of even the most sceptical. It is, however, imagined that his calculations of the saving of fuel arc rather overrated. Nat. Adv.

Iron Mountain. This place is in Washington county, in this state, and is
the most extraordinary store ol Iron ore j
that has yet been discovered in any country. It would not probably be transcending the limits of truth to sav, that it would supply the world with this useful mineral for a long period of time. In appearance it bears a strong resemblance to native iron, and yields on fusion 80, or perhaps 90 per cent. There arcotlur peaces that have been denominated iron mountains, such as that of Trabcrg in Smoland, and two, the names of which we do not recollect, that have been discovered in Lapland; but none of these can be compared with the mountain of Missouii, either in point of magnitude, or in quality of ore. The peculiar quality of the ore of which this section of country is the rich depository, is worthy of attention. At a bloomery erected by Messrs Pecry and Ruggles, iron is produced of a quality greatly superior to anv that can be im ported, and is preferred by smiths, because it is worked with greater facility, -and is found to possess in a very high deY&rce the nronerties of steel. It is stated that the Portuguese army will soon amount to between 50 and 6.1.000 men, and be marched to the Spanish fromier. The Portuguese general Rego and his corps are at Leon, in Spain. The war, the Spaniards say, was not to com mence until the French arrived at Madrid The other pat of the story wants Confirmation. The Boston Centinel states, on the authority of letters from Washington, that the Russian cm peror has receded from the ground taken respecting the jurisdiction oftheNoith West Coast, See and has very wisely revoked his lamous Ukase on the subject. Jriles. Porto Rico. For some time past there have been various reports in circulation, on the subject of the island of Porto Rico being ceded by Spain to the British, and within a few days accounts have been received through different channels stating that the litter have actually taken possession of it. Those accounts corres pond with each other so far as, at least, to render it somewhat probable. Gaz.
