" The navy of this republic has met

Yith a loss in the capture of two co. veits, by a heavy Spanish frigate, and a heavy sloop of war, on the ' st inst. near Poito Cabello. The Colombian ships, although hut very imperfectly armed and manned, fought the Spaniards four hours, but. finally, (bei:i cut almost to piv.es) were compelled to strike The prize taken by Diniels last December called the Maria Prancisc i, and the ship Carabobo, which c ine out from England in November last arc the vessels taken. The former was commanded by capt. Christie, son of the former collector of the p?rt of Baltimore of that name. Com. Daniels was also on board the same ship, having removed his flag to that vessel. It is said that the Carabobo made several attempts to board the Spaniard, but ouing to the superior sailing of the lat'er, could not effect it. By a letter from Daniels at Porto Cabello, or rather on board the Spanish trigate, we learn that he is slightly wounded, but the particulars, as to the other officers, are not given." This is a great misfortune, and will lengthen the war which has so long des dated Colombia, without, however, affording any prospect of success to Spain to repossess herself of the country. Peru. The report of the defeat of the patriots, in Upper Peru, is amply confirmed. Lima would have to be given up to the royalists, for their opponents had not cither nnney nor troops to defend it. Specie had disappeared and the currency of the country was at 50 per cent, discount. We have to report nearly the same talc Sc almost in the same words, but though we shall not allow ar.v fact to escape, which we think ought to be recorded, we cannot load our columns with all the particulars of the barbaraties perpetrated in the south, much less shall we indulge in the frightful coloring itrwhich some of our cotemporariesseem to glory. Cork and Limerick ere bad enough, heaven knows nor docs it require any declamation to rouse the attention of the public to their condition. Wc have already given two proclamations from gen. Rock, to the people of the county of Cork. VVc have now two more before us from which we shall make a few extracts. One fellow, after talking of the precipice of destruction, cries " Heboid, my sword is unsheathed to mow down offenders; mj' fire is kindled cverv night, to' consume their property; my resolution is fixed.
