In the r. k M. Journal of the 29th in. statu, Jolm Lwing, Esq again comes forwv.nl over the signatuic of uAn Aggrieved CitUeu," U complains of my 4 own indistinct language and publishes imputations of inlso anil unfounded charges," Tor the satisfaction of the publick, I will insert the two articles which appeared in my paper, ami leave them to say what motives have actuated Mr. Effing, and whether in the publications of mine, to which he alludes, there is any thing cither vague or ambiguous. From the V. Sun of May 10. " The proceedings of the meeting of the citiz?us ot this place at the court house, on Monday last, w as not received in time for our paper of to day they shall appear in our nest." From the W. Sun of May 17. " The proceedings of the meeting of the citizens of this place, which we had pro mised in this day's paper, having, by the failure of the citizens to attend a subsequent meeting, which hud been called to carry the object and intention of the first into effect, and the object intended being abandoned in the way contemplated by the meeting, we have deemed their insertion useless." The meeting of the citizens above alluded to, was on Monday the 5th of this instant the first notice of mine upon the subject, was on the 10th inst. the special meeting of the Hjard of Trustees was on Wednesday the I4tninst and the meeting of the citizens of the Middle Ward on the night of the same day Here then, you have the whole history of the case. I was satisfied with his apology for asserting a falsehood, and willing to believe he had been mistaken, he is not willing it should be viewed in that light I have given the facts no comments are believed to be necessary In conclusion, permit me sav, that my readers shall not be again troubled upon this m itiet 1 was assailed, by falsehood, and I repelled it with truth. We arc authorised to announce John Javj, as a candidate to represent Knox county, in the next General Assembly. We are authorised to announce William R. Arc. I land becomes appalling. Never did the
contending iacuons wmcn uiviuc mat unhappy country, rage more furiously than at the present moment. Letters of the 25th, from Constantinople, state that lord Mrangford had a audience with the Sultan. It was then resolved lo take a step towards an agreement with Russia: the Rcis Elfendi having declared to lord Strungfonl that the Tuikish ministers were ready to renew the relations with Russia. A formal communication had not been made. An extraordinary courier arrived at Vienna from Constantinople on the 18th, probably with this communication. Exprcses were immediately despatched lorthwith to St. Petersburgh and London. In the Archipelago the Greeks continue to capture vessels Great efforts are making by the Turks for striking a decisive blow against the Greeks. It is stated that the Russian Ambassa dor at Stockholm, has addressed a note to the Government demanding to know, should a war take place between France and Spain, what part they intend taking. The same it would appear, has been done by the Russian Ambassador at Co penhagen. A convention has been published between Russia, Austria, Prussia and Sar dinia, for withdrawing the Austrian troops from the Sardinian country. Great damage has been done by inundations in Holland, several villages being completely under water. There was an earthquake at Palermo on the 5th of March. Above 20 individuals were killed and 150 maimed. The damage was estimated at 50,0007 sterling. Several earthquakes had been also experienced in Svria.
Baliimore, May 6. The ship Balloon, Captain Smith, at this port yesterday from Rotterdam, touched at Portsmouth in the English Channel. A paper of that place of 22d March received at the Exchange News Room, has the following article. uAn intelligent naval gentlemsn who has been residing some time at Toulouse, recently left that city and travelled the Coast Road of France to St. Maiocs We are informed by him, that about 250 English are remaining at 'Toulouse, where the most violent antipathy to the War exists among the civil classes. He computes, from his conversations with military men, that about 100,000 troops of all description are now collected at the Northern foot of the Pyrenees, who however well disposed to be actively employed, do not scruple openly to express their utter dislike to the principles and views
avowed for their inlenedcd campaign. At Rochefott, there are 6 sail of the line in condition for sea, but not manned or rigged; at Brest, there are 20 sail of the line, only one of which is equipping for sea. 15 1 est, and all the towns, garrisons, and villages, are completely drained of soldiers, as since the first orders for collecting an army near Bayonne, a second collection has been assembled in the Western Provinces, with orders to repair to Flanders; and 8oO troops lately marched through Renncs on their way to Valenciennes and Cambray.
