KAULY, Y;a:ctinvs, May tT, l.Sk The Boston Ccnttncl has published a letter of the veneratde John Adams da ted Jan U 1st, 1823 addicted to Dr. Ban !Uotr, of Worcester, on the occasion of Ids having received anil rMad a volume of Sermons written and published by that Clergyman. Omitting the portion (if tuc letter which refers to the writer's religious creed, we copy the following concluding passage, which scenic to us a striking illuMiationof the error of a mode of benevolence much in vogue at present . Tim most afdictive circumstances that I have. witncsseuMn the lot of humanit v arc the narrow views, the unsocial humors, the fastidious scorn, and repul- $ ive. temper of all denominations excepting one. 1 I cannot conclude this letter without nddini? an acecdote One of the zealous mendicants for the contributions to the funds of Missionary Societies, called on a i;enllomvn in Haverhill, and requested bis charity. docs with her battalions They will never permit her to acquire colonies in Amen ta, in Asia, or in the Mcditcrancan sea. In pursuing this course they will but follow the current of public opinion, in guarding the essential public interests." There arc several indications of more import than those wc have alluded to, w hich show that the neutrality ol England may depend on circumstances, and fully justify the apprehensions of those who must fall the first sacrifice to such an cvent Cuha The British minister has stat ed, that orders bad been given to the British troops to take possession of Cuba, by force, if pacific means would not do, and that Spain bad Consented to the arrangement, for the ostensible purpose of suppressing piracy. Two squadrons of ships and a considerable number of troops, have lately arrived at Jamaica, and the belief is entertained that they will soon attempt to get possession of Cuba. These squadrons including transports, amount to sitv sail The Pitates The account of the total destruction of the pirate La Cata, by the British cutter (irccian is fully confirmedshe was blown up ; some of her crew, as they swam ashore, were assailed hy the Hyperion, and nearly every one of them killed It is stated that a British sloop of war
has captured a piratical vessel that bad a
had about a week previous, engaged a large piratical schr. of 10 guns and 90 men, which was blown up but tho most of the crew made their escape; 30 horses on the beach, intended to aid their escape, were taken by the crew of the Gre cian, and one or two of the pirates, who stated that the crew bad shared 4000 dollars each of plunder. A report which was received on Satuulay, by an arrival at Baltimore, that a British gun brig bad been taken by the pirates, was not heard of by the olliccrs of the Atbol. YUCATANINDEPENDENT. A passenger in the schooner Freemason, arrived at Baltimore on Sunday in 18 days from Campcachy, informs that the Province of Yucatan declared itself separate and independent of the government of Mexico, about the end of last month, Sc that a Congress had been convened at Merida, the capital of the Province The Governor of Campcachy was sent out of the Province, being opposed to the change, and another was appointed by the inhabitants. j Wc arc sorry to sec in the account of damages done to the vessels at Ocracock Bar by the late gale of wind, that tbe sch. That France and Spain are at war we have no doubt ; but the part that Gieat Britain will take in ihe fray is not clearly indicated The Paiis ConstitutioneP of the 1 3th March, contains an able communication from a London correspondent on the probable policy of the English ministry, from which the following passages may be deemed by the French people and government of sufficient authority to aggravate their apprehensions of a maritime war. The wtitcr (and he is evidently one of talens and information) after spe (illations on the views of the administration and the peculiar interests of the nation, arrives at the following conclusion, as to the course that will not be pursued in the existing emergency : The ministry (says he) will not a second time let slip thco casion offered by the present crisis, of putting ourselves at the bead of a neutral league of the constitutional against Uie despotic governments. We shall neither be so blind to our own interests, nor t j those of Europe, a connected with our own. They will not permit the French ma rinc, by a new family compact, to erect itself once more in formidable array against u-, and form the rallying point of a matitime confederation against the British empire In the north sea, as in the D.unanells, they will never suffer Russia to become a maritime power, and to encircle Europe with her ships as she now

nearly every man was killed or wounded Laltttc being among the former. The schr. Pilot, of Norfork, was lately captured by the pirates off Matanzas Sc her crew much abused j but they were put ashore, and the wretches went on a cruize in the prize, and captured and robbed two vessels within two miles of Morn castle. Havana but, a few days after, tbe U. States sehr. Jackall fell in with bee and made a recapture, securing, however, only one of the pirates, but several of them were killed in t tc action, fighting desperately It is reported that five captures have been made by com. Porter's squadron, which has been very actively employed some of the vessels had stopped at Port Allen, Thompson's island, or Key West. They bad afforded convoy to many vessels, and the most of the pirates appeared to have retired for the present 'Vitcr, Certain of the inhabitants of Paris have voted a sabre to the sergeant of the national guard who refused to arrest M. Manuel. I afest from Siain, U was reported a Cadiz on tbe 4th of March, that the 53d French regt. which had been sent to construct a bridge at Bidache, bad deserted with all tbe plans in their possession, and had declared themselves in favor of a free constitution It was said, that 15,000 French troops bad really entered Spain, which seemingly much excited the indignation of the people. An arrival from Gibraltar brings newspapers to the 1 1th of March, and a letter of the same date, which says "War appears certain. The King and Cortes remove the 15th for Seville, and it is said the French army enter Spain the same dav. A letter from Malaga, Feb. 22, says u They are now drafting, in this Province, their quota, a force of 30,000 ; the uniforms arc making, and the men Will be immediately sent into the field. To de'ray the expense, the merchants of this city have agreed to give 25,000 dollars. Tbe poverty of the Spanish people seems to exalt their valor while it offers nothing to tempt the invader. Off the latter port, passed a convoy of American and English vessels coming out. We learn bv this arrival, that the boats of the United States sloop of war Peacock, had re-captured from the pirates the schr. Pilot, of Baltimore, after an action, about 40 miles from Havana. Two of the pirates were killed, one a Spaniatd was taken alive who bad a large sum in gold in a belt round his body The rest of the crew made their escape to the shore, though several of them were wounded. A number of muskets, cutlasses. See were found on board the Pilot. Three days previous, she had taken an American brig off Havana abused the Captain and crew in a shocking manner, and taken out all thc could of the cargo.
