nois, since their admission into the union ; but with our present impressions, vc ate coiutudurd to say, that slavery cannot be legally admitted among us, without the consent of the national government ; ami ve cannot suppress our fears that an at tempt to obtain that consent might endanger the union of these stales, light the totch of civil discord, and render them " frightful with desolation M

2d. Slavery is unjust, because it is a

gross usurpation over a part of our fellow

beings for our interest and convenience,

and not theirs. An Usurpation, whotc pro

hibition is written by the finger of God, upon all his works, Unjust because it is appropriating the fruits ol their labor to feed our mouths Unjust, because it is sinking them in mental degradation, to

suppoi t us in indolence and ease. Unjust,

because it is extinguishing m their bo

soms, the love of country, the strongest

incentive to worthy actions ; for, in the

language of the illustrious Jefferson, 4k II a slave can nave a country in this world,

it would be in any other in preference to that in w hich he is born, to live and labor

for another ; in which he must lock up

the faculties of his nature ; contribute as

far as depends upon his individual endea

vors, to the cvanishmcnt of the human

race, or entail his own miserable conditi

on on the endless generations proceeding

from him. It woti.d be pre eminently

unjust for the people of Illinois, because

they have not the plea ol necessity to jus

tify them. In the slave holding states it

is justified on that ground. They say

they have slaves and know not how to get

rid of them We have them not, Sc know

how to do without them. Is there a corner of the christian world, where it is at

tempted to justify slavery as an abstract

right: What a strange spectacle would

be presented to the civilized world, to

sec the people of Illinois, yet innocent of

this great national sin, and in the full en joymenl of all the blessings of free gov

eminent, sitting dow u in solemn conven

tion to deliberate and determine whether

they should introduce among them a por

tion ol their fellow beings, to be cut off

from those blessings, to be loaded with

the chain of bondage, and rendered una

ble to leave any other legacy to their pos

terity, than the inheritance of their own

servitude! I he wise and the good of all

nations would blush at our political dc pravity Our piofcssions of republican

ism and equal freedom would incur the derision of despots, and the scorn and re

proach of tyrants We should write the

epit.tph of free government upon its

tombstone i

vKi u is inexpedient, nccausc it win

retard the prosperity of ourstate for years

to come lvnigntion imoit will cease

from every quarter. From the slave hol

ding states because it wih be a long time

before there will be any dec sion of the

national courts upon the effect of the or

dmaneo ; and no man from those states

wiii venture hither w ith his slaves so long

as he may incur the risk of losing them.

There will be no emurration from the o-

ther states, because tnc people of those states will not take up their abode where

slavery is tolerated It is inexpedient, be

cause slavery is not essential to the growth and piosperity of a country ; and of the truth of this remark, the states of Ky O iio furnish speaking evidence. In the name of the unborn millions who will rise up after us, and call us blessed or accursed, according to our deeds in the name of the injured sons of Africa, whose claims to equal rights with their fellow men will pitad their own catiac against their usurpers before the tribunal of eternal justice, wc conjuic )ou fellow citizens; to ponder upon these tilings.
