to be sinking and dividing, aisunrlerto the extent of about one acre. A gentleman in the neighborhood of this scene told nic that he went round it and on it, about three weeks ago, and very distinctly heard the cracking and snapping of the roots A man of the same neighborhood, who was my pilot to this eventful place on the 25th of June, 1822 told me that it was nroeressincr fast When I
was favored with a view of it, 1 think it had extended over about two acres On the most elevated part of the hill, the earth has sunk about twelve feet perpendicular, while on the lower side it has risen si.Y or eight feet above the surface Over about one acre the timber has all been prostrated on the earth, forming a ruinous appearance from its having been thrown in every direction. On the other part some ol the trees are fallen, whilst the remnant ate piled in different directions, with a number of cracks of different sizes, and running various courses. There is a large crack extending itself along the side of the hill, indicating thereby the further progress of this strange eruption. Previous to this event there was a ;ood spring of water flowing from the troubled part of the earth; the water still issues from the ruin, resem
bling in color the earth which is discoverable in those cracks. ELISIIA HURT.
MURDER. The following is a desoriptionol a man found mutdered near Wiights ferry on V! itc river, on the 9th iust. He was a large man about six vfeet high, had on a homespun blue mixt coat, waist coat and pantaloons all ol the same kind, net suspenders made apparently of the same materials as the cloaths His shoes were made with pegs, mixt socks, home-spun cotton shirt, wliite fur hat, broad brim, band of norrow blue ribbon. There was found in his saddlebags a striped home-spun waist-coat, mixt pantaloons, one pair of white home made socks with clocks, a cotton shirt
homespun with some stripes of yellow & blue in the tail behind, about five yards of cotton netting and two pair of horse shoes. There was also, a drab cloth p;reat coat an old saddle, and the saddle bags, lying near to him. A person sup posed to be the one murdered was seen on Mondtr-the 5th inst. on the road leading from Vincennes to the aboe mention cd ferry, riding a large chesnut sorrel mao, and said he lived within nine miles of Shavjneetoivn Illinois, in company with a man having on a blue grounded round about, and riding a small sorrel rack
Ing mare. This man it is believed purpet rated the murder, as he crossed the ferry, next morning after they had been ccen together, very early, leading the mare (as is now ascertaincd)on which the murdered man had been seen riding, and offered her to the ferry-man very cheap There was found in the hat of tho murdered man a letter dated 1st Augt 1822, directed to a Mr. John Vistcn, Lawrence county, Ohio Written by Silas FaHev at the tequcst of Saml. and Man-, cy Mc Mullen in White county Ills. The deceased appears to have been killed by a blow on the back of the head apparently with an Indian battle ax or kno'ted club, which perforated the hat and skull and it would seem fiom the position in which he was found, lying on his saddle blanket, that they had en candied on the ground, and the blow was inflicted while the unfortunate man was
asleep. His inside coat pocket
turned out, as by the sudden pull of a
pocket book ; and his cloaths were so
loosly in the saddle bags that they were
no doubt pillaged also. The murderer has been pursued, and t is hoped mav be brought to justice, that hi fate mav be rendered a warning to other desperate
men.
Since the above w as in type, the party that went in pursuit of the murderer have
returned with him, and he is now confin-
