VINCENNES, JULY 6, 1822 In the case of the State of Indiana, against the State Bank, on a writ of Quo Warranto, which came on for trial in this court during its late sitting , the jury found a verdict of guilty, on many serious charges alledged by the counsel in behalf of the state -- and on yesterday the court pronounced judgment of forfeiture of the charter of the institution In our next, we will present our readers with the judgment of the court at length. FOR THE, W ESTERN SUN.
MR. STOUT, SIR--The following communication has been transmitted, for publication in the Evansville Gazette; but as that paper has a limited circulation, you will oblige me, by inserting it in your co-lumns.--Yours respectfully, CHAs. DEWEY.
To the Editors of the Evansville Gazette GENTLEMEN. AN anonymous writer in
your paper of June 15th, has seen fit to
mention my name in such a manner as to render it my duty to notice his producti ion so far as it relates to myself The motive of a writer who chooses to conceal his name in an attack on a candidate at the eve if an election, is too palpable to be mistaken ; he seeks to injure, regardless of the means to which he resorts. Truth and falsehood are equally welcome to him, if they equally favor his views. The right of the community to know
the political opinions of those, who offer their services to the public, is acknow-
ledged ; but this right does not include
that at of criminating without proof; no such right does, or ever can exist, so long
as the moral times of society remain un-
dissolved Yet such is the character of
the indirect ?tuck, w uch has been made
upon me, in the shape of questions pro yn muled to Mr John Ewing.
f ie insinuations against me, con'ameu
j.iu'ese qu stions, are supported by no
pt Kit arc tut sanctioned even by a name j . . i. C .i... !
. loti-rn, pernaps, in- sie;iiuun - ui
(hat I was concerned in the smuggling!
business, during the war, or at any other
period that I ever directly or indirectly
opposed the march of the United States'
troops and that I was a member of the
Hartfrrd convention or had any connecti
on with that body, are false. I call upon
my accuser For proot. I solicit the people not to suffer me to become the victim of accusations unsupported by evidence, or even a name. Two of these charges, carry within
themselves, conviction of their own false
hood. If the United States' troops had been opposed in their march through Massachusetts, by a " icbellious and lory faction," a battle must hare been fought. Would an event like that, have been concealed from the public, until this late dav ? Every news-paper would have been filled with it; every tongue would have sounded it. Yet v ho ever heard of it before ? Nobody. The names of the mem bers of the Hartford convention were published in all the papers of the day, and have, in some of the public journals, appeared yearly ever since Yet who hts seen my name among them ? Nobody for it never was there. Indeed these charges indicate an ignorance of public events, equalled only by the malevolence and depravity of their author.
CH RLES DEWEY.
