The people are not yet ready to determine who shall be their next president it would be wrong for them to do it so much in advance ; for events may take place, and probably must come to pass, in the ensuing two years, that will develope the character, and ascertain the pretensions of most of those who are put forward as candidates. Let us wait patiently the operation of truth ; and, in the mean time, do all that we can to sink the bawlers for this man or that man. There is one matter about which I mean to express my opinion decisively which is, the assumption of a power in congress by means of that dirty thing which is called a caucus, to direct the votes of the people in the selection of a president : and 1 have undrstood that a disposition existed in some even to exert this power at the present session ! to render the practice infamous, 1 would hope that such a caucus should be held, if 1 could desire the disgrace of so many men that I would rather respect and esteem. Whenever certain sets of firincifiles are to be supported or opposed, caui us may be tolciated as the means ot extinguishing personal views, and promoting union among the adherents or opponents of such sets of piinciples; but when a

The wealth ol a nation, or an individual, consists in accumulations bom labor, each individual in a community occasions some expense to continue its existence ; if that expence cannot be met by their personal exertion, it becomes a tax on the labois of others, consequently, il the community by common consent prevent an individual from laboting, that individual becomes a public chat ge, hence it became nccessaiy that the public should say w hat they in then judgment thought was sufficient cauc to stop the operation of an individual, and be chargeable with his maintenance, public safety required
