THE WESTEKX MIX V I. YC A'.VAA'.V, OCTUBr.R 6, . .J I. 7heE'vansville Oazeite informs us that Elisha Harrison has been elected Brigadier General in the twelfth biigade of Indiana militia, over James M'Cuila. And also that col. John I. Netty has been elected Brigadier General of 2d brigade, without opposition, vice. R. M. Evans, resigned. 7he sale of public lands, for the north part of Deleware District, commenced on Monday last, and is progressing rapidly. Much competition exists among the purchasers. A Urge number of tracts have been sold as high as from 2 to S6 per acre, and consideiable more piobably will before the close of the sales. Del. Gaz. We announce with pleasure, that the commissioners appointed to superintend the removal of obstructions to the navigation of the Ohio river, between this place and Wheeling, commenced their labors yesterday 7' hey appear to be well provided with implements and boats Pittsburgh Gaz. 10 Sept. Doylestow n, Pa. July 31. "To those who have never wandered far from home, and are unacquainted with the enterprising spirit of Northren Men, the following anecdotes may be in tercsting : A gentleman living on the head waters of the Susquehannah, in the state of New York, entered into contract for furnishing the necessary timber for the Ci ty Hull, at Washington, the seat of government of the Nnited States, During the last winte,r the active axe-men were employed the timber hewed hauled to the river and early in the spring foimed into rafts of convenient size The contractor put on one of his rafts his Dearburn waggon, horse and provender slipped his cable, and accompained by jolly watermen, being himself a skilful piict, run his rafts, without the loss of a single stick, safely to the head of shallop navi ' gation, in Chesapeake Bay. Here suitable vessels were furnished, the timber floated down the Chesapeake, up the Potomac, delivered at Washington city the money piid for it and the gentleman mounted his Dearborn returned home. boston, au 29. We learn thatordcts have been received from Washington to fit for sea the U. S. brig Sparks, now at the navy yard, Charlestown. She is supposed to be destined for the coast of Africa. 7 ne recent rc-captuies of the piizes made on the coast by the Alligators, seems to prove pretty conclusively that the assistance ol larger vessels than schoonetsis demanded for the suppression ot slave trading. One or two vessels of the size of theSpark will be found very useful.
7TIE BABES IN THE WOODS.
i"he following account is published in the Cahawba ( Alabama) Press of the 13th insl. with assurance, that the authenticity may be relied on : On the eleventh ult. two little sons of Mr. Henry Vinioti of Butler county, one four, the other two years old, went out to meet their father on his return from work ; took a wrong direction and got lost in an adjacent wood, which is entirety uninhabited. 7'he inhabitants of Butler turned out en masse and after three fhys and nights diligent search, could not find nor hear the least account of them, and began to despair but slili persevered. On the fourth ciay it "as thought there was no less than two hundred engaged m the hunt. When about four miles from Mr. Vinson's house a' voice was heard from one of the company tfctat signs were found ; which had scarcely died away before the cheering report was sounded bv Mr. Sims that he had found the lost. To describe to vou the scene is past my
pen's communication. The lovely little
babes were well, but much debilitated, however by a proper regimen, are restored to perfect health. 7'hcy had taken up their abode near a refreshing brook and say they intended to live there, and the number of little beds found is indicative of the fact. Aiound their new abode was a number of sassafras bushes, from which thev had gathered the leaves and ba:ked the tigs and eat thereof, w hich was their only support. Sureiy a ruling providence their protector, and ought to be greatfully adored.

villi JLUIWJJV. lately inf rmrd a military gentleman of " this city, that Prussia continues to keep up a pence, establishment of four hundre ; thousand men ; ami that a ncighbothe emperor of Austria, reposes under
the protection of six hundred and fifty lhoU!?and armed myrmadons. Fnese tacts demonstrate more distinctly the political state of Europe, and the attitude of the holy alliance, than can be ascertained through the coiums of certain foreign journals, where every article is invariably written under the surveillance of a censor, who permits only such matter to be propagated as may suit the meridian ol despotism. "The New Albany Cotton Manufactory," in this town, is in opperation ; they will shortly bz able to Manufacture from 1000 to 1500 yards of cioth per week, and supply the country with what yarn will be called for. They have now eight looms in operation which average from 18 to 24 yards per day each. We have seen some of their cloth which we think equals any we have ever seen that was manufactured in America. Dr. Joseph Whitcomb, has been appointed agent for the company, and has plenty of the cloth for sale at his store, much cheaper than imported, Thus ;' as Mr. Niles bays, 4 step by step we are getting up the ladder of Independence." Albany Chronicle. CURIOUS SERMON. George Vashiug:on Webb, solicits the serious and candid attention of each of his customers, who are indebted to him for more than one quarter's newspapers, to that portion of scripture which may be iound recorded in the latter clause of the 8th chapter of the gospel according to St Matthew Pay me what thou owest." In discoursing from these words- it is te intention of the preacher to make no division of his matter to have nothing to do with notes, except bank-notes and to treat the subject neither logically, mctaphisically, nor scripturally, nor religiously, nor morally, nor physically but fieremtorily ! As he has a mortal aversion to long-winded people, ever since he began to collect newspaper accounts, lu will be as brief as a lawyers summons, and leaving his text to explain itself, come to the improvement Beloved brethren! Hearken unto me. and attend to the words of my mouth 1 Pay the Printer quickly ; when thou art in the way with him lest at any time the Printer deliver thv account to the attorney, and the attorney bring thee before the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. 'Verily I say unto thee, thou shalt by no means come out thence till thou hast

BOSTON, Stpt. 4. From Bahia. Capt. Johnson,of the Madeira Packet arrived at this port yesterday, reports that a few days previous to his leaving Bahia, the ' Braziliar s made a faint attempt to declare themselves Independent ; that great distrust and suspicion prevailed, and the European Portuguese were waiting with the greatest anxiety for the arrival of 3000 troops, expected from Lisbon. 7ne Brazilians were very jealous of their rights and spoke publicly of deposing their rulers..
