'Messrs. Brandon Co. Toward the close of the late session of the general assembly, a report was made by the committee on banks, implicating my conduct in respect to an exchange of paper, commonly called Steam Mill votes, for the p iper of the Corydon branch, conforma b y to an arrangement with the President "of" that branch and myself. Mr Lane in his communication to the legislature of the 4th Jan 1321, disclaims a knowledge

of any arrangement for that purpose. I now repeat the assertion of the fact, that he did agree to the issue of paper by the mother bank, oh account of the Corydon hianch.i'or my use, to be reimbuised in our notes, and without comment u y submit to the public the letters of N. Eving, T. Posey, E. Uoudiwot, addressed to mc, and herewith inclosed. Respectfully, B. PARKL.

May 14, 1S21. Vincennes, May 2, 1821. sm In answer to your inquiry concerning the transaction between Daniel C. Lane and yourself, with regard to the exchange of paper of the Corydon branch for Steam Mill paper, as well as I can recollect, about the 7th day of March, 1820, D. C. Lane csqr. came to Vincennes to make some arrangement with the bank of Vincennes on behalf of the State. f After some conversation with him about the difficulty the branch at Corydon experienced in making exchage for her paper, not having other paper to offer for them, he, Lane, enquired of me, if I thought you would exchange with him Sft-im Mill ninrrfnr thnt of the Corvdon

branch. I told him I did not know. He Ki -iTiked mc to walk with him to see you 1 agreed, Sc we went to your house. The business was introduced and an arrangement was made between you and him for ' the exchange of a certain amount, which I do not now recollect You observed to mr. Lane that you had but few notes on t hand signed but that some be signed, and that you would forward L.. them to the Corydon branch by ths fir&t

safe opportunity, and if none offered befoie, that you would take them on when you went to court in May. Mr. Lane then directed me to tell the cashier of the Vincennes bank to let you have notes on the branch at C orydon, which 1 did This is all 1 now recollect with respect to that ti autaction.

As it regards my letter of the 23d April, 1820, to D. C. Lane, esq. it had noV ing to do with the above transaction. It was merely a private letter to, as I believed, a private friend, on the subject of a loan, which you as the agent of the Steam Mill Com. wished to make from that branch, and why mr. Lane should so far deviate from the path of honor, as to betray private confidence I cannot account, but it appears to have been begged in, to bolster up his assertion which he had declared in the report to the legislature. -I am, sir, respectfully, your obedient servant, NATH. EVINTG. The han. B. Parke, Esq. (Copy.) Bak of Vincennes. May 4, 1821. ',, . I

n r-AUKK, r.sq. sir me noies Harmed you in April 1820 payable at the Corydon branch, in consequence as I understood of an arrangement for that purpose with the president ot that branch were dated, viz: g 1 ,100 the 1 9th April, 181, on account of the figures inserted for the date in the engraving of the notes, the two first notes in a sheet having the figures 18 and the two other notes ha ins? the figures 131 and 'he balance S20u0, were signed by 1. Blackford, cashr. and dated at t .e time staled in the notes, (Ft b. 3i, 1818.) Mr. Lane was in Vincennes about the middle of March, 1 8 0. I afterward understood fmm mr. Kwing that an arrangement had been made between you and Lane for an exchange of paper, and was directed to deliver you what you received. E. BOUDINOF, Cashier. (Copy )

Vincennes, Airil 7, 1821. dti .a. sir In reference to your enquiry touching an insinuation contained in the address of Daniel 1.. Lane to the legislature of th 4th January last, that the exchange of paper, and the application for a loan were one and the same thing. I have to state that they were distinct and independent transactions the branch paper, with a view to an exchange, having betn obtained prior to your visit to Corydon the Utter part of April 1820, when an application for a loan was made, and which was not obtained.
