The mail of yesterday brings us an accfj'tut of the dath of the venerable William I'ixdl'iv, of PonnsyU mia, of v.-lucsi Slate lie had been, until recently, ; r many years, nn able and useful Repi csantativo in Congress. I n the Revolutionary War, he was a tried and sterling -.Mtiio;, and ha has clme nothing since that time to impair that character. Ho was, for several years, the "Father" of the House of Representatives. His voice was so much impaired as to prevent hu hjing a miliilluous speaker indeed so far as to make it somewhat difficult to x understand him. But notwithstanding r yhis defect, !us rising was the sure signal tor mute attention. He had seen so much, read so muoh, and remembered so much, that he could not speak uninterestingly on anv subject. Ha was em phalic ally a Chronicle of the Times through which he had lied, and cadily imparted for the benefit of others what lie knew of them. The p;rowin infirmities of ae induced him, a year or two ago, to retire from Congress. He has not lo:v survived his retirement, bir bus gone to the abode of his fathers' full of years and full of honor .Yat. Int. !:cr:cjv Tlour The following conversation on this subject took place in the English House of Commons on the 2d of February : "Mr. Curtis said he observed in the (r' . rr'c, an advertisement, the object of which was to procure a supply cf American flour for the military stationed in the British .Vest Islands He was desirous to know trom the right Hon. gentlemen opposite, the president of the board of traue, why a preference should not be triven to the produce of Hi itisli airricul-

t turists particularly at the present time, v.'iien so viueh distress was felt in that brvnch of industry.

"Mr. Robinson said the reason why American Hour was preferred to British for the use of the W est India colonies was 'his, that American Hour was found to keep better in the West India islands. British Hour got a fair trial, and it was iouu-l not to answer so well. It was ints; n'led, however, to make another exper'""Smeii;. Mi'. Curv?n believed the reason why American Hour kept better in the West J Indies was that the strain in America, was iaid c: a ircvious to its ficir.r It in not the fact that American wheat :s kiln dried. Its supcrioiitv owing to the climate and our proximity to the West Indies must always command for , our flour a preference to thai of anv other country. Even in (ireat Hritain iuelf. American Hour is preferred to that manufactured from the beat English wheat.

VARIETY. S.'mves The Herculina, capt. Gaza, (or Ganiz,) arrived at Havanna on the t3th ultimo, with "90 eUs from the coast of Africa.

William Floyd, (N. Y ) aged 87, John Adams, (Mass.) aged 86, Charles Carrol, (Md.) and Thomas JefTerson, (Va.) the youngest of all, are the only surviving signers of the Declaration of Independence. M. Gourbillon, in his travels in Sicily, (1819) gives the following itrangc statement. 44 Nothing is more remarkable (says M. (ioui billon) that the constitution of the consulates of this city (Messina) 'I he American consul, is a Russian , the Russian consul a German ; the German consul a Dutchman ; the. Dutch consul a Svis ; the Neapolitan consul a Frenchman ; and the French consul a Neapolitan. Not one of them has ever been in the country which employs him, nor can speak it language. irmif Hoard The National Intelligencer remarki, that Generals Drown, cott, and Gaines are to form a Board of General OHicers in Washington, to make the selection from the present officers of the army, mad? nccesstry by the act for reducing the army. The London Monthly Magazine for February, 182 1, says. 44 A late traveller in Italy describes the empress Maria Louisa, the wife of Napoleon, as being still under the Survirltance, of Count Neippcrg. She is negligent in her dress, pale in her complc?;ion, care worn and melancholy. We have long 1 cp.vd that she is little better th .n a prisoner." The emigrations to the U. S. are computed by Mr. Niles, at 400 persons a dav or 146,0U) a year. It is stated in a letter from the Hon. A. R Woodward to Dr. Mitchell, of N. York, "that there is a regular tide in Lake Erie ; that it 11 nvs and ebbs twice in 14 hours, at intervals of 6 hours and eleven minutes and that it is greatest at the new and full moons and least at the quarters. The minimum of me within the period during w hich obsevations were made, was as much as 8 inches the maximum of rise was in the same period as much as 40 inches." Cure for the Pile. Ta1 e a tea-cup of molasses, in which a s-nal lump of fresh butter has been mixed, and let it simmer over the fire for 2 or 3 minutes. This simple remedy, taken on going to bed has been known repeatedly to eradicate this disease. Margaret Nicholson, the unfortunate woman who attempted to assnsin.ite his lato most excellent majesty in the year 179, is still living and is kept as a state patient, under nominal restraint, in Rethlchem hospital. Considering her advanced ago, she is in possession of most of the faculties usual at those years except that cf hearing which is quite gone. The English naval force to be kept up is said to be 80 sail of the line, with a suitable proportion of smaller vessels. The greatest number of regular troop armed and in pay at anv one time, during the revolutionary war. was 46,849, which number were in service in 1778 ; and 3,193 cf them were lerscymen.
