Frim ihr Indiana Gazette. Fiom the number of letters advertised in the pest cfiicc for the Secretary cf UtatCy it is reasonable to suppose that the clerks in the General Post Ofnse, will be made wed acquainted with the operations of our state concerns. Our lecrialature last winter made some regulations with respect to the payment of postage, at the special application of the Secretaiy; but they seem to fall short of the object intended. Oilier objects, far more pleasing to the Secretary's taste and wishes, have stronger claims upon his purse than to be paying out nine pences for public letters. TO THE CITIZKXS OF I.YDIAXJ. TO you it is due, that an explanation should be given, and the true reasons assigned for the supposed inattention which has been paid to letters addressed to the otiicc of Ser.retaty of StiUe ; as we'd as s-n cxj-oMMo of the intent and meaning ol the in.". ynd ilkberal paragraph, co::riii:i i; : ; Iiuiiana (ta.ette of the 5th i?::-!. Thi s, fellow citizens, is a brief narrative of Lets. I now ohVr a greater advance on those notes, and pledge myself to use. cvety cscition cn my part, to further and promottt the object and intention of the general rssembly, vrhich evidently v-ns that the Treasury should furnish a sullieiency of money, in addition to the no iv. ins I amount of ech quarters postage to piocure tho?e inestimable jewels, so much admired by the public punter and post master, his duckks, impedimcrts maddens sau hum ml vain efforts to the crutrary nl ; On observing this ho much. ; o .1 - ell concerted puragrnpl:, I a . - -r .'. .i -...ie to the Edi'o s, inteia'.it:- ii ier Mt ? vr.iar, of vthich th.e follow i:.r; iw u tpy. l The Editus of the Indiana Gaxctte will comic cnd to insert, that the Secretary of State vill, at his Isuuro imwcr, ?nd thnt the satisfaction of the citizcniof
Indiana, the ill advised paragraph contained in their last paper, relative to the duties of his ofiice, or connected vtith it ; this explanation is due to the citizens of Indiana, and they shall have it." After, and not until after the appearance of their paper of the 12th inst. as an apology for its net having been published, was I informed that it had no name, although I had handed it in myself. Astonishing sagacity of this sage pi Sitter to the slate ! who could have thought but him, it wanted a name ? It really appcrs that since hi memorable defeat in the election for the ofiice of Secretary of Mate, (although aided by the strong arm of poAver, as has been often stated, and by some believed) he has been restive as a goaded ox, (unlike one though in this) he never winces, or Kiiks back, constantly masying on. From the commencement almost of the last session of the legislature, to the present tin.c, lie has used every means in his power, and exercised every faculty of his strong brain and nervous mind, to render the proceedings of the legislature contemptible and rcdiculous in your estimation, as the numerous publications in his very eddying and instructive paper make manifest. He lias even had the temerity to attack tho governor, to accuse the executive of the state of neg.igcnce, and say that he signed a law without first reading it, and hst of all to charge home on the poor secretary. Thus docs lie spurn at the mother who gave him suck, and would paralyze the hand that fust ushered him into public notice. I low in the plenitude of his wisdom he has ascertained, unless by th art of hocus-pocus, that the secrets of the cabi act were contained in the few letters he says he has transmitted to the general post ofFice, urul to use his own language, that u the clerks would be made veil acquainted with the operations of our state concerns." The latter part of the paiagraph is too contemptible to deserve notit c, it must have been dictated by one destitute cf sensibility oi taste, and vhose wishes can onl) be satiated fey an indulgence of the spirit of ingratitude and detraction. It would have been well if a few nine penecs had b o expended in the (-Miration if our public prime., it might have saved the u SOV fm miking 3h en au to the revised code and g.3l) to himself for exposing his own blunders. Thus then you see, the object is evidently to render the legislative body contemptible, and the secretary conspicuous, as may be easily perceived Your fellow ritizen, ROl.ER r A. NEW. Corydon, April 1821. BY THIS E V F.XIXG S MATE, Philadelphia, April 7.
