POETRY. CONTENT. ("The following soft and discriptivc song is from the pen of Cunnings ham, the pastoral poet, and a more beautiful description cannot be found in the works of Theocritus or Virgil." Port FUte. O'ER moorlands and mountains, rude, barren and bare, As wilder'd and wearied I roam, A gentle young shepherdess sees my despair, And leads me o'er lawns to her home : Yellow sheaves from rich Ceres her cottage had crown'd, Green rushes were strew'd on the floor ; Her casements sweet woodbines crept wantonly round And deck'd the sod seats at the door. We set ourselves down to a cooling repast, Fiesh fruits; and she culTd ine the best, Till thrown from my guard by some glances she caat, Love slily stole into my breast. I told my soft wishes ; she sweetly replied, Ye virgins, her voice was divine. I've rich ones neglected, and rreat ones acmcd) But take me, fond shepherd, I'm thine. Her air was so modest, her aspect so meek, So simple, yet sweet were her charms I kiss'd the ripe roses that glow'd on her cheek, And lock'd the leve maid in my arms . Now jocund together we tend a few sheep, And if on the bank of yon stream, Rcclin'd on her bosom, I sink into sleep, Her image still softens my dream. Together wc range on the slow rising hills, Delighted with pastoral views, Or rest on the rock whence the streamlet distils, And point out new themes for my muse. To pomp or proud titles she ne'er did aspire, The damsel's of humble descent, The cottage of Peace, is well known for her sire, And the shepherds have named her CONTENT. Exit act from c .Yarrative cf the rircumstanccs that occurred on board the sloofi Mary, of Mobile, on a piratical c, uize. 44 On the morning of the 23th June, 1819, we discovered several sail ; one of them proved to be the British brig Ann, of Scarborough. Wc were ordered by the captain to arm ourselves and man the boat. The following men were sent Peter Frederick Miller, who was to act as commander, William Smith, John Purlong, James Cae, Thomas ShelHn, William Johnson, John Read, and Chase Chamberlain, (a black.) When they left the sloop, the captain urged them to act bravely ; he then presented each with a glass of spirits, and gave them the following instructions : when you get on board the brig, keep perfectly silent as respects your errand. If you should be asked to drink, resolutely refuse. Ii they should ask you any impropci (pacstiuns, or say that you were known you must immediately shoot them After having received these precautions, we set out upon our cxpedi tion to the brig ; we came up to her about 4 o'clock in the afternoon The Captain hailed us, and desirec ;o know our business: wc answc ed, "that we would acquaint bin; when wc got on board." After soiru hesitation, he threw lua rope; wc then ascendeu the brig, according to pit ious arrangement. Peter Frederic ! Miller took possession of the but: vitli very little ccuniony, as prizv. master, and ordered her crew into tl.r icrecastie. ( apta'm Sunley, the m?.cr of the briir. was ordered aft , vJ ' - - ames Chase was placed as acentin ! at the cabin door, to prtver.tth. possibility of a rescue. itwi uniii m ii " The self-made prize-master Peter Miller, now exercised nil the previligcs of his ofice. He assumed the most determined authority, and ordered the men about as though they were slaves. Approachir.g the captain of the brig, he anogantlv demanded to know where he was from, and where he was bound The captain, with the mildness and good breeding of a perfect gentleman, answered that he was fiom the M atanxas, bound to Eal mouth, (E ) for orders, when he expected to he sentiu Havre or Hamburgh Miiler then asked him of what his caro consisted ; he replied, ccfiec and sugar. Have you any money on board ? was another question, which cur prizemaster thought was of too much importance to omit. Captain Sun'cy replied that he had not any. But. retorted Miller, I know better than all that ; it is not to be supposed that you would undeitake a voyage so extensive, without having some money by you. You must, therefore, tell the truth, or sufier the consequences. The captain of the brig seemed novr to leel all the horrors of his situation. Those dreadful forebodings which frequently agitate the mind an ! destroy its wonted energies, when under the influence of apprehension, appeared to press heavily upon him. And, alas 1 they were truly the presages of his own lamentable and unhappy fate. He was now in the power of a set of men whose feelings were callous as adamant, and in whose bosoms pity had long since ceased to reside. It was in vain for him to crdeav&rto save the property of his owners, which seemed to have been the prominent wish of his hesrt. Nay, after he had informed them of what money lie had on board, they still remained unsatisfied, and made their unbelief a plausible pretext for commiting crimes of the most Loriible nature. " While these things were transacting on board the brig, the sloop came up. The prize-master ordered Captain Sunlcy and five of his crew to go on board. When the boat arrived within hearing, Capt. Neiii hailed them; and, when alongside, they were all ordered on board, which order was immediately obeyed. Nell very hautily addressed ( apt. bin. ley, in the follow ing words. 4 Pray, sir, are you th? captain of that brii; V u I .am, sir 1" (replied the other.) " Well, sir, you will then go on board and bring your papers, for my inspectioi." I have them with me," (answered Sunlcy.) O, you have ; well, sir, suppose you then accompaRy me into the cabin, where I shall enter into a minute examination of them." They then went into the cabin, where they remained about a quartet oi an hour, ai the expiration cf this time they both came upon deck, when Capt. Neill ordered two of the brig's crew ( James Cai ian end John, the Dutchman ) to come on board the sloop, where he confined them. He then told Capt. Sunky that he might go on board the biig ; and gave him instructions to the piize master (Mdlcr) to alter the comic of the brig, and to follow tlx- sloop. After Sunlcy returned and deli; tied these compulsatory orders, the l ii hauled her wind, and stood for the sloop. When she came up, Capt. Neill ordered them to send the bout aboard, whirh they did. He then ordered Johnson and Read to return, and bring two more of the brig's crew (Early and Newton) and all i . rds, except Furlong, Smith and Mii.er. The brig's company consisted of the captain, seven men, and a boy ; also sick gentleman, passenger. Four were now en board the sloop The manoeuvres cf Neiii may now be vci y easily chined: having two of th crew in confinement, (ilv umi two ' c hnd seduced to frTow hi frtu: cs.) c sent Joiu son ar.d Hca:;, (am i.-sg ach with a pis:ol, making their number five,) with directions that each an should take his man." When ey got on board " ho btig, Johnson tnt uptothc prizc-masler (Miiler) . tid informed him tha it was the par"n ular orders of Capt. Neiii, that .!;ecrcw of the bri should be despatched. Miller then, in secret, give i ulcrs for each cf the pirates to be . . ady atul, w hen lie gave the word, ti.ey nniat each take his nun" A few minutes on'y elapsed b fo'-c t! e c:ucl order was gicn Mh.er l.itnzi if setting the examph- bv fiilr ; -at ai.d wounding, Capt.
