Lceke thinks the idea ofsettleing at Sherbro will be abandoned, in consequence of the shallowness of the water, not being of sufficient depth in the habor for ships of war. Why have they abandoned the thought of settling at Ilulam ? The island is fertile, having a good harbor, and situated to command the trade of the natives up Rio Grande, and considerable from the Gambia. It is far the best place in Africa to found a colonT' . Since the arrival of the Commissioners for the trial of slave vessels at Sierra Leone, 32 of that description have been captured and condemned. That inhuman traffic is now carried on to an alarming extent. Twenty vessels'wcre reported the other day to be in Bisaao a id Cassao Rio Grande, all for slaves.

From South America. The brig Virginia, captain Reynolds, arrived from Baltimore on Saturday morning, in 46 days from Moldenado. The following is a brief summary (copied from the Gazette,) ot tlie events which took place at Buenos Ayres down to 29th of April, being the latest intelligence received at Monte Video, previous to the sailing

ot the Virginia. Buenos Ayfces continued to be agitated by the jarring elements of faction. An attempt was made by Gen. Alvear, in the latter end of March, to usurp the command of the troops, displace the government, and substitute another, more favorable to his views ;

but his designs proving inetVectual, he lied to t tic quarters of gen Carrera who commanded a corps of the federal army, and, being demanded from the latter, s jught refuge with Gen. Ramirez, G jvernor of the province ot Eutrc Kiqs. It was officially announced, that an election would be held on the 20th of April, for members to represent the country in the Federal Congress. Lord Cochrane captured and took possession of Valdivia on tfic 4th

Fcbuary, with the loss of two killed and eleven wounded. He had previously been off Guayaquil, in quest ol the Spanish frigate Prueba, but she eluded his pursuit, by landing her guns, and ascending the river. His Lordship communicated with Bolivar, who was in Quito, at the head of 8,000 men, the principal part of whom had joined him on his march from New Grcncda. G :n. Santander, with ti e advanced guard of the patriot army, occupied Cuenca, distant about 50 miles from Guayaquil.
