PROPOSALS FOR. PUBLISHING BY SUBSCRIPTION THE SECOND EDITI0X OF THE GEOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES OE THE WESTERN COUNT'EY, Being the result of the travels, extensive researches and remarks of EDMUJW who was commissioned as acnt, lo explore and select from the Public Lands, the most eligible situations For AG U10U LTD IUS COMMERCE, with a view to make locations and purchases. The curious and interesting facts collected by the author, in surveying rhese rude scenes of Nature, so lately the haunt of the untutored Savage, have accumulated to the size of two volumes. This work is intended as a guide- to emigrants, who are seeking how to better their condi tion by traversing ?ca and land thousands of miles, to gain a new home, where a more tempelate climate and fertile soil, confers health and plenty Also, for schools. The intention of the author, in the first volume, is to give a general view of the whole western country, from the Allegheny Mountains to the Pacific Ocean. Also, the boundaries and latitudes of the Rritish and Spanish dominions in the preliminary remarks Alter tlie ormer. will be given a mo e eompendous geographical description of tlie western country, as delineated and parcelled off into seperate states and territories, by the acts of Congress. And also, a description of the respective parts of the unsettled and unsold public lands and late surveys, in tlie states of Ohio, Indiana. Illinois, Tennessee. Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the Arkensaw, Missouri, and Michigan territories including lands designated bv the Spanish and I'rench for donations, but not called for. and a brief account of the Canals now opening, anil in contemplation to connect the waters of the great Western Lakes, with the Mississippi anil Hudson rivers. Also will be added the Census for 1820 of the United Stages and territories and the latitudes of each state. Tiie attention of the. author in the first volume lias been chiefly confined to objects which would be most likely to determine the choice of a prudent man in a place of residence wnere he purposed to fix himself down for life. Such as the temperature of climate, healthiness of situation, face of the country, quality of the soil and 'the water, rivers and permanent streams natural mill-seats, growth of timber, distances and bearings from places designed by natuie for a market mines and fossils. Indeed, the author has endeavoured in his researches and remarks, to truly present, principally from his own personal and critical observations, the peculiar privileges and advantages naturally attached to tlie respective parts of the Western Country. The second volume will contain a complete and correct description of the Military Bounty Lands in Illinois & Missouri, collected from personal observations and actual survey, a:.d a map taken from the same, designating sections the author having lived on and expired th.-se lands one year. Also, a particular description of the fractional sections which lie on the 7:lssissippiand Illinois rivers they being the most important part of the lands in the tract a d will be sold like other Congress lands. On these fractional sections are the principal s; iie for towns. Mills and Ferries within the military tract Also, those sections which have on them minerals and salt springs, will be particularly designated. There will be added to this work, a it of the principal roads and routs by land and v ater extending, from the provinces of New-Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, through the United Stales tnd its Territories, to the Pacific Ocean embracing the main interior cross roads, betwe; a the towns and phaces of most note. Also, will be added, the numerous tribes Indians, a d their manneiN and worship, west of the Allegheny Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, and numbers of souls, as far as can be obtained from every authentic source. CONDITIONS. The work will be printed with a handsome type on good paper, and delivered to subscriber neatly bouns'. and gold lettered for 1 75 boundm boards, &1 Z7i The volume will ontain dOO pages the second volume will contain about 200 pages at one dollar without the map. and with it 0 I 75. There will be Maps of each of the western states and territories, from t ttial survey, as soon as possible after the surveys are received, of the late purchases from the Indians A discount of 30 percent will be ma le to those who take 25 cuvmorc copies. The author tenders his acknowledgements to those who have nati onr,:ed him by their veryliberal purchases and recommendations of the first addition of his work, and assures tin: public generally that he will, if his :ife and health are scared, be indefatigable in his researches, and hat the most particular care will he taken, in the revision and eorreefion ot the second edition. Descriptions of new villages, recently established, shall be inserted if forwarded to Cincinnati, postpaid.
