PROPOSALS FOR PUBLISHING BY SUBSCRIPTION THE SECO.D EDITION OF THE GEOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES OF THE WESTERN COUNTRY, Being the result of the travels, extensive researches and remarks of EDMUND DANA. who was commissioned as anient, to explore and select from the Public Lands, the most eligible situation for AGRICULTURE $ COMMERCE, with a view to make locations and purchases.
The curious and interesting facts collected by the author, in surveying these rude scenes of Mature, so lately the haunt of the untutored Savage, have accumulated to the size of two volumes. This work is intended as a guide to emigrants, who are seeking how to better their condition by traversing sea and land thousands of miles, to gain anew home, where a more temperate climate and fertile soil, confers health and plenty Also, for schools. The intention of the author, in the first volume, is to give a general view of the whole western country, from the Allegheny Mountains to the Pacific Ocean. Also, the boundaries and latitudes of the British and Spanish dominions in the preliminary remarks -After the ormer. will be given a tnnre eompendous geographical description of the western country, as delineated and parcelled off into seperate states and territories, by the acts of Congress. And also, a description of the respective parts of the unsettled and unsold public lands and late surveys, in the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Tennessee. Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the Arkensaw, Missouri, and Michigan territories including lands designated by the Spanish and French for donations, but not called for, and a brief account of the Canals now opening, and in contemplation to connect the waters of the great Western Lakes, with the Mississippi and Hudson rivers. Also will be added the Census for 1820 of the United States and territories and tiie latitudes of each state. The attention of the author in the first volume has been chiefly confined to objects which would be most likely to determine the choice of a prudent man in a place of residence where be purposed to fix himself down for life. Such as the temperature of climate, healthiness of sit uatiun. face of the country, quality of the soil and the water, rivers and permanent streams lKiHu a! mill-seats, growth of timber, distances and bearings from places designed by nature for a market mines and fossils. Indeed, the author has endeavoured in his researches and remarks to truly present, principally from his own personal and critical observations, the peculiar privileges and advantages naturally attached to the respective parts of the Western Country. The second volume will contain a complete and correct description of the Military Bounty Lands in Illinois & Missouri, collected from personal observations and actual survey, and a nvp taken from the same, designating sections the author having lived on and explored those lands o ;e yea'. Also, a particular description of the fractional sections which lie on the Misspsinpi and Illinois rivers they being the most important part of the lands in the tract, and win he sold like other Congress lands. On these fractional sections are the principal scites for towns. Mill and Ferries within the military tract Also, those sections which have on them minerals and salt springs, wdl be particularly designated. There will he added to this work, a list of the principal roads and routs by land and water
extending, from the provinces of Tew-Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, through the United States
and its Territories, to the Pacific Ocean embracing the main interior cross roads, between the towns and places of most note. Also, will be added, the numerous tribes ot Indians, and their manners and worship, west of the Allegheny Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, and
