Spiral Springs. THIS MAY CERTIFY, that I have applied the circular tpiral springs to a moveable pad to saddles, for the purpose of previ ntiRg the friction and inconvenience arising to the rider, to precnt the uneasiness aiismg from hard trotting horses, and the heat that
is so very unpleasant in warm weather. It appears that the spiral springs bcir.j5 h vcrV important in arresting the jolt or shock of carriages and hor ses, may perhaps have been discover-' ed before ; although in the exan.h ation of many machines, factories, and laboratories, I have never seen any representation of thesn. Their small expense, small capacity, air! peculiar effect to the numerous machines in which they are applicable, render them an object of very considerable importance. I ti carriages intended to convey passengers in as small capacity as possible, these springs, by being affixed under the cushions of each seat, comshock occasioned by bad roads, S;c. pieteiy remove any Kind ot lolt or Therefore their advantage may be easily imagined where stages run with great velocity on pavements, kc. In saddles they are affixed to the tree directly beneath the seat of the rider, but to give the scat as much motion as possible, t'.ie leathering ol the seat is stuffed, and confined rery loosely to the saddles. In saddles thus constructed, the webbing is not necessarv. JOSEPH B. F.MERSON, M. D. Vincennes. Ind.
