PROM BUENOS AYRES. Vet- Yoi k, May 20. Messrs. Lang and 'I inner : I hand voti some of the last Buenos-Ayres Gazettes that lad arrived at. Monte Video previous to my leaving that! place. Letters trom Buenos Yvres, as late as the 8th of February, had reached Monte Video, stating that considerable alarm existed at the place, in consequence of the approach of a pretty strong force of Montarenas, under the command of Andreseto, one of Artegas's generals ; they had already ad vanccd within 18 leagues of that city, and, by postpmg mem selves on the principal roads leading from it, had in a great measure cut off their communication, with the inter ior, and of course with their
army on the west side of the the tenth ult. Capt. Carran with $3,300 postage of double common council. Resolve to continent. eo that gen. Artigas would endeavor to make himself mas ter of Buenos Ayres. But, should that city make a speritcu uac in me means u posses ses.to nepel such an enterpnze, it may very well be doubted whether he has the power to effect it. His forces being almost entirely cavalry, seem illy qualified to storm forts, or batter store houses. But, though this description of troops may not be adequate to the immediate reduction of the city, it is peculiarly adopted for harrassing the Buenos- A v Ireans, and, under a leader of the activity and enterprize of Artega, will doubtless do them serious injury. He can in a degree destroy their trade with the country, and render very precarious, if not impracticable, their intercourse with their arm v. The Portoo;uese remain in quiet possession of Monte Video; for as they seldom venture far beyond their lines, which are in sio;ht of the city, nothing more than some slight skirmishing had recently occurred between them and Artegas, whose offensive measures consist chiefely in driving the herds of cattle from the coast into the interior, and prohibiting the introduction of hides or jerked beef, on pain of death By this prohibition he has caused a creat scarcity of hides at Monte Video, and cut off a principal source of revenue to the Portuguese, on the export of that article. Gen. San Martin had joined his army in the neighborhood of Valparaiso. His movements since the battle of Maipo afford little interest. Extraet to the Editor of the Patriot Datrd Havanna .
