TO THE PUBLIC.
FELLOV CITIZENS It is with 'Co small decree of reluctance that I once more obtrude myself upon the notice of the public ; and I had hoped when closing my last, that I should not be again forced to the necessity of another newspaper communication. Circumstances hmc however aain induced me to address vou. Seeing a publication in the Western Sun signed by Homer Johnson and Samuel Emmison, in which I am impeached with knowingly making false statements to the public. To Homer Johnson my answer is given Unfortunately for Mr 'ohnson, the inhabitants of Vincennes are but too well acquainted frith the reason for my protest and a more convint :tng proof of its cot rectness im mmur altering the survey since, and
T""' o r y our frequent statements to different persons that your needle varied, also remarking that had you attended to the whole of the first survey yourself, that you would lot have had it to alter Now if t was correct when 1 avc my protest io the public, where was the necessity of tattering the first survey ? All these circumstances will show the public that you have signed your name to a publication, knowing it at the same time to be untrue Shame ! shame ! ! That you should suffer yourself to be led by any man or men, y giving the public your name to injure the innocent, knowing at the same time, , o far as regards my protest, your publication was untrue. If proof is wanting of Mr. Johnson's altering the first survey since my potest there are a number of the inhabitants F Vincennes who are willing to attest As regards my statement of the proposals f r surveying the commons, you are in the same manner to be pitied ; for I believe you were the dupe of false impressions made by one who hoped thereby to evade through you, that ccnure on him that was given in my answer to the trustees of the Borough in thier remarks on my protest, as the following will show. You assure the pub-
lie that previous io jonn swings naving advocated your getting the job of surveying the commons, he made such a verbal statement as you had authorised. As it regards that statement, you are incorrect ; for the first thing he stated to the Board was that as you had made a sacrifice in the surveying of the Borough, that the Board were now empowered to remunerate you by the survey of the Commons. But his oratory was not sufficient to invalidate the opinion of aome of the members, with others it was sufficient, as you will see by reference to the minutes of the Hoard on that dav. He then extolled your talents, and then made your verbal offer ; but the Board did not think proper to accept it. For the truth of the above facts as regards the proposal, I refer you to the following gentlemen, from whom certificates can be had if necessary. Capt. Robert Buntin O R. C. Sullivan Esq. and Hon G W.Johnston. As it regards Wm. R. McCalls proposal I will only say that certain circumstances forbid my answering you on that aubject; but 1 will refer you to other tnembers of the Hoard I have now done with you, Mr. Johnson and in closing will give you this short piece of advice ; which I hope you will treasure up for tre government of your conduct in future ; never to sign again any other mans production, unless better supported by facts than the one to which your signature is affixed ; and that in all your dealings with mankind to remember that truth is a much better support to your cause tham falsehood. MARK BARNETT. Jan. 25, 1819 8-w m o k m to o UNITED STATES' MILITIA.
