VINGENNES :
S:l Tl RD.4Y, jAWAiir2, 1819. . We are desired to state that it was a barn of nir. Stnirl's that was burnt, not Ms In cry stable. We appreciate the good opinion of that enlightened public on whom we rely for support) tOO much to heedlessly pass their a'd vice, and therefore the following communication not only merits our regard. .but commands our sincere thanks. One. circumstance we w ill just refer to, that our readers may be fully appiised of the unprincipled opposition. Doctor McNamee, who has for years been Xamous lor prevarication and falsehood, lately attempted in the most abusive manner to strengthen one of his pitiful mistatcmcnts by a reference to Esquire Greater we immediately called upon that gentleman, w ho assured us, he had written to the doctor a week before that reference) contradicting the falsehood. When our duty forces us to notice such a being;, we will if possible on every occasion preserve self respect, and that respect which we shall never loose sight of for an intelligent and upright people. Mr. Stout, The malignity, envy, and personal and political hatred, manifested by Jcnning's Ccntinel, towards your establishment ar;d yourself, we wish you hereafter to pay less attention to. Such meanness baseness, and silly chicanery, as lias been displayed by the editors of that deceptive paper, can have no effect upon us ; for ten years we have found yon unchangebly faithful and up right, and you should treat the depraved hireling wretches, who, destitute of talents, as they are of every moral principle, with total indifference The hull Doctor, alias doctor nuLL now editor of that watch tower of faction, is perfectly understood, and perfectly known ; his willingness to sacrifice the constitution, law s, freedom and happiness of the State, at the altar of Jennings' ascendancy, might reasonably have been expected so might a continuance of his low, dirty scurrility against all whose influence and talents the cabal dread ; and you should hereafter, pass his slime with contempt as we do. One certain result w ill follow that course ; the little nocTon v. ill then discover, that our citizens (denominated by him the Vincennes faction) arc not composed of such
mateials as will ever suit a depraved demagogue, therefore thev can estimate
nib base designs ; his employers will also
discover that they have 'honesty andfirmess to fix on him the well merited mark of public reprobation ; bendes as he has shown himself on more than one occasion dead to shame, k has so often violated the sanctity of truth, they will find it needless to attempt farther bolstering. We therefore advise you to bestow no attention upon any publication in that sinister paper ; except where it attempts to delude in regard to general matters, n t within our knowledge. Seme of us hae taken doctor hull's filthy sheet, actuated by mere curiosity, but we are row satisfied, and the period of our subs', ription will completely cure that feeling. You have adhered to principle and t truth ; and while we are giving vou this advice, we w ish yon not to vary from your established course ; but only to toass w ilh silent contempt, the corupt beJpg whose course is so different. Ve remain as heretofore your friends
ad rlowers.
no very favorable omen of its future improvement. WASHINGTON Dec, 5. We understand that on the 20th of October, the day before he lately left London on his return to Paris, Mr. Nalleton, in conjunction with Mr. Rush, signed a TREATY betwi en the United States and Great Britain, which had just been concluded, by those gentlemen, with plenipotcntaries on the part of Great Britain ; but we do not learn that any copy of this Treaty has yet been received here. .Vat.
