Next Sunday, the 13th inst. the Rev. Jeim Jeun will preach in the Roman chapel at 4 o'clock, p. m. Tr .xf H orn the Cm tine!. " Brutus ucknn-'r Iges hunsdf lobe a - federalist:' COMMENT. If all our readers can yet refer to the last piece of our correspondent 'Brutus,' and see What he there says of party names the above will not require much explanation Brutus says he cares noth i.ig for part) names ; but he states that fir herly understand federalist and republican under our form of government means the same thine;; ; and some f. the present party who up told Gov. JVtfUngs, act precisely as the federalists ,ornv-ily did, when the term first became Obnoxious under the administration of Mr. Adams he gives their conduct in proof. W well remember when Mr. ienntngS v is in this place, it was lomj after The reign of Mr. dams administration, and he then professed himself to be a federalist we believe he was tight at that time in saving so forit was not probably upon principles that he adopted c appellation ; but it was because it Nsifcuht he becoming a tvranical faction, whose conduct Brutus shews Mr, Jenfcmgs now imitates. Mr. Jennings certainly anticipated more benefit from the establishment of the Centinel Press than its present Editors and their truth-telling correspondents can vcrv conveniently render; and no doubt these men are w eak enough to expect much less of censure id contempt than the people can consistent Tvith their best judgment refrain from bestowing be this as it may, it is curious at present to notice their Writhing and twisting ; in e very number which the present Editors have issued, we can colli et proofs of our opinion of them ; in tt eir last week's paper there are at least a dozen but we will not tire our readers by a reference to more than two. S-mie weeks ago they fabricated a tale by distorting the circumstances w hich attended forty six voters in the year 1 8 1 1. They stated that "4 Frenchmen Were d firived f their votes because

they could not pronounce the name of J ."Kit ban Jennings as distinctly asAmericans, although they designated the per S'm they voted for by saying it was their last and present delegate in Congress." This fabrication clearly involved the correctness and integrity of those who presided at that election we searched for a correct knowledge of the mattermentioned the names of the irreproacable men who acted on the occasion, and ap pealed to living testimony to contradict the whole statement as given in the Centinel. No doubt this slanderer felt abashed he dares not deny our statement but has the usual characteristic cunning to attempt palliating his crime by charging us With admitting its truth 1 We show that not one vote was u rejected1 the name given in by the voters w as recorded, and we have respectable names ready to testifv tha no mention was made of "last and present delegate to Conpress." Was not the statement made bv the Centinel unfounded) and was it

not (list jning facts yet on record r was unfouujded for the reasons above mentioned, and distorted because 46 is Oatted 44, and because facts are on record to which allusiotl is made, which must be perverted and distorted too, When falsehood is founded upon them. I he columns of the Centinel afford so many 'instances of'4 stories altogether unfouuded and distorted too," that we really tronder its Editors would have to enquire if that were possible yet almost in the same breath they talk of k candour, fair dealing and logic SM That of which thev demonstrate themselves to be totally wanting, they cannot judge of in others. Thus with all the whining and perversion of them lviitors, they find themselves just as they were. The next instance to which we would ffcfer is the declaration which they make in their last weeks paper, that no proof of the Centinel press being sent here h kpt under the controul of governor Jennings, has yet been produced docs not every man In the state know that declaration is untrue ? Xo wonder the pcovv pie should refuse to place any reliance Sn what that paper .ys, when one of the editors of it w ill not believe his own declarations. Has not Or Mc Namce tei'd that Mr. Dillworth edited the Centinel for Ten Dollars per week and Office eapences ! Has not governor Jennings himself said that he owned one 4a("of the ruv-s and that hhi brother owned the other ? Old not a settlement Take nlacc between governor lennings k :r. that he may be at once confoundra? )r is he blind enough to think that 1 the malicious illnaturc which flows from his pen and heait," the'4 dark malignant insinuations, ambiguous hints and unfounded assertions," in all of which he deals so abundantly will be taken for granted by a free and virtuous people, while corrupt subserviency Sc base party schemes arc staring them in the face ? Will the remembrance of facts be effaced, and the people be imposed upon by false promises, when conduct contradicts them, and labored sophistry, evasion and abuse only attempt to cover ? We have no fears upon that head. Vet it may well be thought surprising with such a mass of testimony belbre the public, the conductors of that echo of faction have still (he audacity to assert that no evidence has been produced How unfortunate for the wretched men and their assistants, that they cannot delude and corrupt the people how unfortunate for them, that tl eir unprincipled cause is now perfectly understood and they must obliterate their own sentiment and conduct before they can cover its iniquity. THE Fl7)1uT)AS AGAIN, The editors of the Charleston t ity Ga zctte, have transmitted us the following from their correspondent, which is of the same import as that published in the Patriot, the 1st inst. We yet have doubts of its correctness . Bait. P(. . "H wann a 17th JlWT5l8. ''Gentlemen Capt. They write from Cambra -y that the opinion at the English head-quarters is, that the decision of the allied sovaigns with regard to the evacuation of the army of oci upation will be in favor of France, and that all the preparations appear to announce the speedy departure of the foreign troops. It is again proposed to form a junction of the North Sea with the Baltic, by means of a canal, the expense of which is estimated at 300,000 crowns. London, June 17. This morning we received Paris papers of Sunday last. An article from Madrid states, that an expedition has at length sailed from Cadiz for South-V-merica, but it consists only of 2000 men and a frigate, a force as large, we believe as the present state of Spain can afford to send, but too coptcmptible to effect any important object on the vast continent of South-America. No notice is taken in these papers of the rumor we mentioned yesterday relative to the confederation of the kine: of Portugal with the Independents in the Spanish provinces. v m I Cumberland Bank robbers detected. We learn from Portland, (says the Boston Daily Advertiser of the 8th ult.) that on Thursday a Mr. Daniel Manly was arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the late robbery of the bank, and bonds to the amount of g 30,000 having been demanded of him, which he could not obtain, he was committed to prison. A captain Rolf was likewise arrested, and being told that strong circumstantial evidence existed against him, and offered the choice either to be committed to prison for trial or to disclose the place where the money was secreted; receive a reward of 10,000 dollars (which sum had been publicly offered by the directors)and his liberty, chose the latter. On going to the place where he said the money was deposited, which was a little way out of town, he was unable to find it. He then offered to find the specie, a part of which he found His liberty was then given him, and he soon after committed suicide by shooting himself with a pistol. The desperate act it was thought was caused bv mortification at the part he had acted, and disappointment at not receiving the reward. The paper money it was supposed had been previously taken aw ay by Manly. Before committing suicide, capt. Roff declared that no other beside himself and Manly were concerned in entering the bunk, but that a brother-in-law ot M. a Mr E. Delav, who was arrested, assisted in carrying it Jjway and

THE FLORIDAS The National Intelligencer continues to contradict the report of the cession of the Hondas to the United States. PORTLAND, Aug. 6. Cumberland bank money recovered. The directors of the Cumberland bank, have the satisfaction to announce to the public, that all the monies, specie as well as bills of every description, stoled from the bank on the night of the 1st inst. have this dav been recovered. JOSEPH SWIFT, Cashier. The Savannah Republican of the 6th inst. states that capt. Obed Wright, who had been arrested for trial in September, escaped from Milledgeville on the night of the 27th ult. From the Democratic Press.. Mr BtNNS It is stated in your paper ot the 23d instant, that certain Trench officers who have established themselves in the province of Taxas, were those French to whom congress granted a tract of land in the Alabama. This is a mistake ; the association to whom congress made the grant have proceeded according to their original intention, and have already made considerable progress in the survey and improvement of the lands for which they feel grateful to the enlightened and humane legislators of America. General Lc Febvre Dcsnoucttes, like another Cincinnatus, is now in the Alabama cultivating his farm, beloved and respected by every one In the country : many other Frenchmen of eminence are also his companions there, contented and happy. It is also a mistake that the French officers of Taxas had any concern in the Alabama country, wflbk they arc said to have sold out to sjecJLors, and with the proceeds were cnaijVlto transport themselves to the Spanisn territories. The fact is, that a considerable number of French officers long ago had determined to get looting in the Spanish dominions and last w inter many of them when in Philadelphia, in order to conceal their scheme, gave out that thev were going to the Alabama This circumstance has misled yaur correspondent in his notice of the Alabama settlement A regard for justice induces me to re-
